Photoshop cursor problem

Every once in a while, my cursor becomes a cross hair for all tools. For example, the eraser tool cursor is normally a circle, but sometimes it is a cross hair. It is the cross hair for all the tools then. Sometimes it goes away when I restart Photoshop, sometimes not. Sometimes when I reboot, sometimes not. Any thoughts? It is quite frustrating.

Thanks,

Peter

Thank you, Peter, for asking. I have had the same frustrating problem.

Thanks, Ron for supplying the answer.

It’s a buttbiter that’s for sure. I added a beep to my capslock using the:

Control Panel>Accessibility Options>Toggle Keys> then check >Use ToggleKeys

Now it beeps if I accidentally hit the capslock key.

Never seen this little Option before. Very cool. I just hope I can remember what I did or then I’ll be wondering what that little noise was I keep hearing.

Amy way to change the sound it makes?

Play on your keyboard and search until you find the cross hair. I knew it happens and could not remember why.
Took less than 3 sec’s to find it when Caps Lock are on. Most probably that is your problem.

Not sure about that, but as Windows sounds go it’s one of the more acceptable ones.
Btw, that tip came to me by way of this group, more than two years ago, from Nicholas Sherlock. (http://www.sherlocksoftware.org/)

This is a good newsgroup. I’ve learned more about PS in this newsgroup than from any other source.

I enabled the CapLock beep but the sound doesn’t show up in Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, under the Sounds tab so perhaps the sound can’t be changed? Like you said, it’s actually not that bad a sound.

You can consider using _
Oops… I Did It Again.mp3 – Britney Spears
as a sound.

you can customize all sounds in Windows XP one by one or download a different scheme and install it

sound… 2 tab…. sounds
bottom of window
highlight the one you wish to change
browse to file>select it

probably best to preload any sounds to the folder where the system ones are they are .wav format
located in windows/media

I know how to customize the sounds and I use a custom sound scheme with sounds of my choice but I do not see a place to change what I will call the CapsLock sound.

Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Sounds tab. Is it a Windows sound? It’s not the Asterisk, Default Beep, Exclamation, Question or System Notification sound.

You replied with how to change the sound. I know how to do that. Which sound is the sound of the CapsLock key as set at Control Panel, Accessibility Options,Toggle Keys, Use ToggleKeys?

From using FileMon, I don’t think it’s any sound file. If you feel like it, you could use Process Explorer to see what is changed when you change the setting and perhaps that will lead you to something adjustable.

We’re getting a little off topic here but I’m not sure how Process Explorer, which I have installed, is going to do what you’re saying? Sometimes I can live with the "default" sound. I don’t hit the CapsLock key that often. bUT i DO SOMETIMES. 😉

It might show you what resources are accessed when you change the setting in the control panel. One of the many lines of information could refer to the generation of the sound.

It could be a priority from MS’s pov that it not be easily changed. I am just speculating, but there may be expensive equipment designed to work with that sound.

depending on your keyboard this may be controlled in the keyboard driver interface?
I would think it would use the default error sound otherwise?? maybe under the accessibility interface?

I don’t use that feature so I am not sure

It’s not a normal sound, it doesn’t even come out of your speakers, it comes out of the tiny speaker inside your pc case,
the one that also warns you when something’s wrong with your hardware. If you turn the volume down, you will still hear it.
I don’t think you can change it.

Thank you. Everything you say is correct. It’s like the POST beep.
