Am I missing something or is it not possible to stop a search in the CS file browser once it has started? It seems incredible to me that this function is not available so I assume I am overlooking the obvious.

Several times I have not wanted to wait for the search to finish searching once I found what I was looking for but had wait up to 5 minutes sometimes for the search to finish, in the meantime not being able to use any other functions on my computer (which has 1GB of RAM and a P4 2.4 GHz processor).

Had the same problem when I made the stupid mistake of accessing files direct from the DVD drive (slooooow as…)
Not even Ctrl + Alt + Delete would cancel it.
Well & truly brought everything to a grinding halt.

The File Browser hassle has been mentioned numerous times. A search will bring up a wealth of info.

Best solution is to set it to cache all sub folders on all HDD’s overnight.

I’ve had this problem also. Went to open a file and accidentally clicked on a file stuffed with image files. It took PS CS forever to do its thing and let me then go to the folder I really wanted. I’m kind of thinking it wouldn’t be a major task for the Adobe folks to correct (or rather "adjust") the browser function in a dot release. Does anyone know if Adobe is in fact working this issue?

Escape should stop the search, and creating thumbnails/metadata is always interruptable (just click somewhere or use a keyboard command).

In the case of a DVD drive – the OS or DVD driver had control at that point, otherwise Photoshop would have responded.

On my windows machine while the file browser has a search in process not only does ‘escape’ do nothing, but no menu commands are available in photoshop, nor does it respond to anything (clicking within window or keyboard command) until the search is finished. Also, unlike poster ’86’ I am searching a hard drive, not a DVD.

Interrupting creating thumbs/metadata is another thing altogether.

Markal,

My computer responds the same way. When PS CS is searching through the files using the browser, escape doesn’t do anything, other file commands don’t work, and clicking elsewhere does no good as well. It’s like my machine is possessed by PS CS’s supernatural powers. I have to be very careful not to use the browser on a folder that may contain many images, or I’ll loose lots of time waiting around for PS to do its thing.

A call to Adobe led me to believe you and I are the only ones who think there’s an issue here….yea, right. I know PS is the leader among image editing software, and that this browser thing is arguably a small problem. However, if the folks at Adobe don’t take it seriously, or perhaps, just don’t understand our point, we certainly can’t expect a fix from them.

The workaround here is to use another application in tandem with PS. When I’m given a CD to work from, I check how many files are on it. If it has thousands, or even just hundreds, I use a program called VuePrint from Hamrick to view the files, and then open them in PS without using the browser.

The browser function has really been beefed up since it’s introduction just a couple versions ago. Publishers often rely on user comments to bring bugs and wish-list suggestions to their attention for product improvement. I’m sure Adobe does things this way, so let’s hope they pick up on this before the dot release.

Esc key does not stop my file broswer either in CS. I just have learned to live with it but it would be nice in the future to be able to stop the search process.

Just my 2 cents.
