Has anyone tried Photoshop CS4 under Vista 64 and have any comments on performance, reliability or can report on any problems. I would also be interested on how much RAM has been used and what main processor and graphics card has been used. Is there one CD for 32 and 64 bit Photoshop CS4 or are they different products?

I’ve been using it for about a month w/ no probs.

I would also be interested on how much RAM has been used and what main processor and graphics card has been used.

My experimentation with large images involved a 129 megapixel PhotoMerge. I found it rather hard, even with aggressive memory management settings, to coax Photoshop into using more than 2 or 4 gigs of RAM. It also seldom uses more than one core, so CPU maxes out at about 25%, occasionally approaching 50%.

One interesting finding that I haven’t confirmed yet, is that the PhotoMerge, which was of a large building, was asymetrically distorted in 32 bit, and correct in 64 bit.

Main processor is an AMD 2.5 4 core, and Asus M3n78 Pro Mobo. Using the built in Nvidia 8300 graphics.

One CD for both.

Other thoughts. 64 bit is the mouse that roared, only it’s not roaring.

From a marketing standpoint, Adobe is soft pedaling 64 bit. There is almost no functional or performance difference, other than capacity, which can be important for those who deal with large images.

There is almost no discussion of 64 bit porting issues in the developer forums, and very few plugin manufacturers have made the necessary changes to run in 64 bit. Bridge is still 32 bit. 64 bit should be a big deal, with manufacturers of camera backs, folks who composite large images, and other people who deal routinely with large images, have been waiting for. Just guessing that this may be an indication of their Mac centric approach, and things will perk up when the Mac is 64 bit.

It can even be confusing as to which version you are running – even on a 64 bit system, 32 bit PS is installed as the default. The easiest way to tell which is running is to look for the *32 next to the process name in Task Manager.

thanks for the very interesting information. I like to keep up with the latest releases of Photoshop and am at the point where I am looking at upgrading to CS4. I mainly work with very large files from my 1Ds III often with multilayer psd files of between 0.8 to 1.8 Gb and do some compositing so feel the speed of processing. My current CS3 system is a quad core intel Q6600 (I think) about 13 months old 10K rpm disk dedicated for Photoshop swapping – it runs like lightening on small to mid size files but grinds down with very large files. Before I upgrade I will look further at 64 bit Vista.

It also seldom
uses more than one core, so CPU maxes out at about 25%, occasionally approaching 50%.
On my existing system I believe that all four cores are active – I have a quad processor vista gadget which displayes all four core activity – on a largish selection and feather of 250 pixeld on a large file all four cores went straight to about 50% each. On other commands all four cores go up and down usually asynchronisly but it is not unusual fo one to go above 90%.

From your comments I will not rush into 64 bits – probably wait until march next and ask again.

I recently installed CS4 Master Collection on my Vista64 Ultimate PC and found that five of the installed programs won’t launch, AE, Encoder, Flash, and a couple of others. There were no error messages spawned during installation. PS does work properly and I’ve been enjoying its CUDA boosted features with large images.

I’m bumping up against my 4GB limit of installed memory currently while working so I’m thinking of increasing that to 8MB soon. The largest image I’ve tried with PS CS4 so far has been a 13"x44" heavily composited panorama at 400dpi. The flattened TIF is about 550MB and zoooming/panning/spinning is a dream on my system (Quadcore, GF8800GTX, SCSI 15Krpm RAID configuration), even with the original PSD file.

I have yet to try the recent program updates posted to see if there’s been any bug fixes.
