I have a problem with Photoshop CS I didn’t have
with older versions of Photoshop, which actually makes
me consider uninstalling Photoshop CS.
Whenever I open a TIFF file I scanned, the
Pixel Aspect Ratio is automatically changed into
something different than square. This is really annoying considering how many files I have to edit. Is there any
way to stop this from happening, besides writing a batch script to open all the files, modify the aspect ration and save it again? Where is the Pixel Aspect Ration Information contained
in the TIFF files? Does my scanning software save this information? I hope someone could help me with this. Thank you very much in advance.

It means that your scanner software said that the aspect ratio wasn’t square. If the file or scanner driver said nothing, it would default to square.

The only way to stop it is to get the scanning software fixed.

TIFF contains separate fields for horizontal and vertical resolution. Yes, your scanning software appears to save that information.

Chris, Thank you very much for your help. I thought I was checking the TIFFs, and the resolution was OK. 600dpi vertical and 600dpi horizontal, and still have the problem. It’s only corrected after i change the aspect ration inside Photoshop and then save the file. I thought maybe the aspect ratio was different from the DPIs information in the file.

Thank you for your help.

OK – that would mean that the scanner software is saving a bitmap (B&W) image, and using a FAX compression scheme — which is supposed to have the 2:1 aspect ratio….

Not scanning bitmap, or using a different compression scheme would solve the problem.

I also have the same problem. Unfortunately the TIFF files that I use are from gov’t survey plans and I cannot change how they were originally scanned. Does anybody know how to switch off that particular function so that I don’t have to manually turn off pixel aspect ratio correction?

You can’t switch it off, and you’ll have to setup an action or manually reset the aspect ratio.
