First, you tell us what software you have to attempt it in.

One might assume that because you are posting in a newsgroup that has "photoshop" in the name that you have Adobe Photoshop. Somehow, I don’t think that’s a good assumption in this case.

Most photo manipulation software has this function. has the help menu been accessed?

Image>Mode>Grayscale.

There are other methods that give you more control over the final result. One is to use two hue/sat adjustment layers. Set the top H/S layer to zero saturation to create a monochrome image. Then use the hue slider of the bottom H/S adjustment layer to change the relative contrast of the various colors.

Certainly there are imagination and art in coloring a black and white image but I fail to see any sense in deleting the colors by converting a colored image to black and white.

Here are some reasons – you can probably think of more:

1)targeting a black and white publication.
2)otherwise meeting the demands of a customer
3)duplicating the look of older images
5)trying out cool new ideas.
6)using the black and white image for an effect in the final color image – an example would be making a detail or pattern in a color image clearly visible to the 10 percent or so of the population that are color blind.

In all the above cases, conversion is needed because black and white cameras are few and far between.

You convinced me, Mike:-) there are some reasons…
most of them not for the sake of art, but there they are:-)
