I created an action that resizes an image and then saves it for the web. However, when I run the batch and choose the file naming options of serial number, etc, Photoshop ignores the selection and saves each file with the name that I saved it in the action. How do you get the batch job to rename files will completing the action?

File > Save for Web (recorded as an Export command in the action) does not work like you would expect when invoked in batch. The folder recorded in the Export command is where processed files are placed. File names are unchanged.

Export does not honor the Destination folder nor custom file names specified in the File > Automate > Batch dialog. The results are the same regardless of which options are on/off in the FAB dialog.

You’ll need to do the rename as a separate manual step using the File Browser batch rename facility.

I can’t tell you "why" it was architected to work that way (a topic of many discussions), it just does.

Thank you. Could you create he batch without doing the save? Also, is their any documentation on the file browser batch rename? Thanks again.

What I am trying to do is to resize and save for web. This makes the file size the smallest. However, to do this you have to choose the save for web function. The problem is as you stated that the "save" function does not work in the batch process. Any ideas in getting the file the smallest size and doing it in a batch?

File > Save for Web (recorded as Export) works fine in batch. What you have to live with are two restrictions that don’t apply to any other situation:
* File name changes, e.g., assigning custom file names via the File Naming boxes at the bottom of the File > Automate > Batch dialog are ignored.
* Specifiying a Destination folder in the File > Automate > Batch dialog is a pointless exercise, too. No matter what is specified in the Destination, the files are saved in the folder specified when the Save for Web command was recorded.

So, in the batch process, you can resize and optimize via Save for Web. However processed images are forced into the folder recorded in the Save for Web command and file names are unchanged.

If your action converted images into any other format using a regular Save As command, custom file names could be applied and you would be able to specify the destination folder.

RE: Batch rename using the File Browser documentation
Don’t recall seeing any. I’d say do a little experimenting and you’ll be on your way in no time. * Put 5-6 test images into a folder.
* Create a destination folder
* Open File Browser and navigate to the folder with the 5-6 images * Right-click, choose Select all
* Right-click (again), select Batch rename
* Click option "Move to new folder"
* Browse to the destination folder
* Note the default settings: Document name + extension = the original file name * Then start experimenting with the dropdown menus. Note: You can type custom text in any of the boxes, e.g., "Birthday-2004". Be sure the last box populated is "extension" (upper or lower case).

Hope this gets you moving.
