I am running windows XP home edition on a HP zd7000 with 512mb of ram and a 80gb hard drive with the nVidia gforce 5600 graphics card w/128mb of vram. I have the adobe creative suite installed. Every time I work in Photoshop CS for anywhere from 10 to 30 min. the computer will without warning or error message completly shut down. Does anybody out there know what might be causing such a power failure? Also, has this happened to any one else?

Contact HP about replacing your laptop with another model – the zd7000 contains defective hardware.

Did I mention that this is my second zd7000? Can you be more specific about "Defective Hardware". I would like to know why PC magazine is saying that this is one of their top choices for a desktop replacement computer.

It runs under Windows.

That’s the problem!

(Big fat nudging elbow to your ribs!!! ;););) )

No, seriously…return for Chris’s analysis.

First of all, they probably didn’t test it properly. Secondly, when did you last see a magazine come out and say "Don’t buy the blabla from HP, one of our main advertisers. It’s faulty".

if it’s shutting down from an application under xp (or win2k) it’s defective hardware. also it sounds as if chris has an inside track on that particular model. return it and either ask for a replacement or another model.

If you bought it through the retail channel (as opposed to the VAR channel) be prepared for a loooooong battle. It took me over 10 MONTHS to finally get them to replace the main board and power supply on my Compaq (HP) Presario laptop after it did roughly the same thing and then never came back on again.

The unit went back and forth no less then *5* times, the last time returning without a hard drive (make sure you have a backup and DON’T leave anything like personal data or financial info on it). The excuse given was that it was ‘stolen in transit’ even though the box was sealed on shipping and was returned sealed…more than likely when they replaced the main board they forgot the HDD on the technician’s bench.

I won’t even go into how annoying the multiple calls were, being bounced from India to Canada to Texas, etc. I ended up finally getting everything put together and the SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. I bought a E-machines laptop which I am very happy with now. As a post script, about a month ago I took the HP laptop out of the box where it had been sitting idly for the prior four months and out of curiousity tried plugging it in, never expecting of course that it would work. Suprisingly it did and hasn’t had a problem since.

I’d NEVER buy another HP/Compaq product again, even though I work with their servers on a regular basis as a consultant/network engineer. Great servers, crappy retail products.

Alright, if I did get a MAC the question then is: Can a "Windows" Photoshop .psd file be read and edited on the MAC? Is there a program that would let MAC Photoshop files be read and edited by PC Photoshop?

There’s no difference in the files and virtually no difference in the program.

Now, end this Windows/Mac thing before it even gets started or this thread goes R/O.

I am not looking for an endorsement for either macs or pc’s I just want to know if a pc Photoshop CS file can be opened and edited on the mac and if I do get a mac I would not be trying to open mac files on the PC as that usually does not work.

It most certainly does. As I already said, the files are completely crossplatform compatible.

It happens to me too using my Toshiba Satelite Laptop. I am under the impression that my computer is overheating due to processor maxing out. It also turns off when I try to play Command and Conquer games. This is NOT the sasser virus – I checked. Toshiba Tech support suggested I bring in the laptop – and someday soon I will….

Lynch Mike,
I’ve had two baked processors on my relatively new desktop machine caused by the processor maxing out and inadequate cooling. Anything that would max out the processor (PS, certain games) would cause the machine to crash. It get worse over time as well. Recommend you get it seen to.

Talking (briefly) about Macs. I was one of the unfortunates to purchase one of the first 5300 PowerMac PowerBooks. Man, what a mess. It started to disintegrate after a couple of months. At least Apple did a free repair job.

I guess the 3 WinkieCons and a text description of my elbow-in-the-ribs "just kidding!" motion wasn’t obvious enough to some folks.

I only lament that I didn’t get to read Andrew’s full scathing reply before it was truncated. I’m sure I would’ve had a good laugh.

Seriously….use whatever the heck you want, but don’t bawlbaby when it malfunctions in ways you should have been aware of, as a loving, attentive computer user. (NOT directed at you and your present problem, Cary)

as i said, xp (and win2k) being process isolated operating systems, cannot be brought down by software. there’s a hardware problem on both machines reported crashing in this thread. the manufacturer should fix or replace them (or offer a similarly configured different model).

Cary – see the forum FAQ for more info, and a link to a support document with some details.

Basically: the design of the machine is flawed, so all zd7000 laptops will most likely have the same problem.

It was intended that way Phos,

I hope I can express it more “diplomatically” next time. I’m sure there’s going to be next time. 😉
