I just loaded Photoshop CS onto my computer a day or so ago (I’m using Windows XP). I have been trying to work with an image and here is the problem:

I cannot change the foreground or background color (or draw in color with any tool). Whether I click on the Swatches, the Color Picker or whatever, nothing happens. The only colors that will appear are black, gray and white. Nothing else.

This same thing happens when I load an emtpy Photoshop file. It will load and I can change both the foreground and background colors fine, but as soon as I create a canvas of attempt to import an image, they (along with all the tools) default to either black, gray or white.

What can I do?

First check that the image is in RGB mode and not greyscale or bitmap
