I was sent a cd that was supposed to contain pictures of ice cream. When I tried to open it in PS7 on my pc I get message "could not open "ice cream scan.eps" because the parser module can not parse the file. Isn’t eps a post script file? Why would an ad agency send pictures as a eps file? Can it be opened in PS? Any help would be appreciated.

..eps is "encapsulated postscript", yes.
..eps can have vector or raster into, or both.

Yes, PS can open valid EPS files. If any part is vector, it gives you option of what resolution to rasterize.

But those files are either corrupted during CD burn or are in some non- standard EPS format.

Email me one if you like, just to confirm that it’s not a problem with your PS installation only.

Thanks for your response. When I go to the file icon then right click on it, in properties it says its 485 mb. To big to e-mail. Also in properties it says its a Encapsulated Post Script file but says "Opens with Illustrator" When I try to open it in IL8 dialog says unknown file. Any ideas? Thanks

The reason the file’s properties state "Opens with Illustrator" is that your computer defaults to opening ALL EPS files in Illustrator, regardless of how they were created.

485 Mb is pretty big. I’ve seen CorelDraw make such huge files. If you have Acrobat Distiller, try making a PDF at press-quality settings, then openning that PDF in Photoshop. If that won’t do it, you’ll need the agency to get you a new file. If they are using CoorelDraw, then feel free to key scratch their cars, then ask them to save the artwork as a 300 ppi TIFF.

I’ll say!

No, no real ideas.

I’m guessing bad encoding somehow in the CD burn. This start as Macintosh file?
I’m wondering whether that header info was put there with Macintosh fork info or whether it’s your system that has .eps associated with Illy.

But still and all, if it were a valid .eps file, regardless of which platform it started on should open in PS 7. Like an .ai file, it should ask you at what size/ppi you’d like to rasterize it. But it doesn’t get that far.
