I received an email yesterday with a web page link to a "blowout sale" offer of Photoshop 7 (guarenteed complete OEM, no manual or packaging included) for $44.95 US. Here’s the link:

My question is: Is this legit or a bootleg? Is this software so cheap because PS8 is about to ship? I certainly would enjoy getting PS7 but not if piracy is involved…(If this is a scam, feel free to pass the word on to Adobe…)

Philip, what’s you’ll get is a burned CD with a scrap of paper containing a serial number.

Don’t fall for it.

Besides, someone once told me that Adobe never made PS7 an OEM software…

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer.

That would mean that Adobe builds PS systems. I’ve yet to hear of one of those, but man would it be sweet!

(if anyone mentions a Mac, I swear to ____ [insert deities name here] I’ll flame you like a human torch at a gay pride parade.)

Cheesfood,

If I understand your thinking, my Canon EOS 10D is built by Adobe because it came bundled with Photoshop Elements? In that case, Sony is also a company of Adobe because some of their products ships with Elements as well. You should really surf around and learn what is OEM software before stating things like that.

And as for the last part of your thread, the very least I can say is that it’s insulting. What’s wrong with the Gay Pride? I wonder why Adobe didn’t remove your message from this forum.

Hey Ray… I think you misunderstood Cheese. He was saying that in order to be OEM, that Adobe would have to make all of those things and he’d love it if that were true. I believe he was just being sarcastic about wishing Adobe would do those things

Not sarcastic at all, except that I was thwarting away Mac trolls who were itching to bring up Mac’s.

AVID makes OEM software because they will build you a dedicated AVID suite. If Adobe started building Adobe workstations, man that would be sweet! PS that loads in seconds and doesn’t bomb when you have more that three Adobe products open at the same time.

Cheesefood,

Or look at it this way. Microsoft doesn’t actually produce computers but sells an OEM version of their operating systems to various computer manufacturers who install it on their systems for sale.

Yeah, that’s what I said.
However, the machines that MS is loaded on are specifically built to house that software, and the software manages the hardware processes. The OS tells all the other pieces of the computer how to react. Yes, other software can be loaded onto the computer, but the OS is the only piece of software that the computer was designed around.

When the Original Equipment Manufacturer specifies that WidgetX is necessary for the BigWidgetMachine to run correctly, you’ve created an OEM installation.

I worked in the automation field long enough to know that OEM’s don’t always produce the pieces that make the whole. They rarely do. They assemble.

Trust me, I understand OEM. Even if you’re not clicking onto my metaphors, just trust that I’ve been a Marketing Specialist for various OEM products long enough to know what the term means.

Sarcastic was the best word I could think of. I knew what you were trying to say, but could tell Ray didn’t. Oh well.. tried to help! LOL

I was more Tongue-In-Cheek than anything.

"Last off, Adobe doesn’t monitor the forums."

Considering that just today they ( READ: those operating under Adobe’s aegis) deleted about 15 threads of mine in different forums, where I linked to the petition I started about the recent changes to the forums, I’d say you’re dead wrong.

And yet flame wars can linger and burn for months.

Go figure.

I’d say that I am in light of these new changes.

Like burning Phosphor.

How a term is used and understood may be completely different from what the dictionary says it is. (See a recent post thread refering to the many different meanings of a term used to refer to people who hit real little balls with big clubs in many acre courses of grass, sand, and water pockets.)

OEM does have the official meaning of Orig. Equip. Maker. But in the "wild" it has come to also mean "bundled with".

Language use changes. It isn’t just new words that requre new dictionaries. Intelegent USED to mean being able to carry out routine tasks in a machine like way. Awful had the original meaning of creating awe in the person who saw the statue, painting, building, etc.

And to close this OT post, does anyong know what it used to mean when someone called you a "brick"? Did you punch them or smile?
