Why does ACR ignore certain 20D raw data?

Is there some reason why Adobe Camera Raw ignores some of the in-camera settings of the Canon 20D? For instance, if an image is shot using the B&W mode, ACR ignores this header information and renders the image in color. Similarly, in-camera settings such as Parameter 1 and Parameter 2 are ignored by ACR as well.

Canon tells me that these types of information are included in the metadata and readable by 3rd party raw converters. I’m curious why Adobe chooses to ignore this data.

And I’m curious why you aren’t asking Adobe, if you want their reasons.

Because each camera maker, in their wisdom, decides to use an area called "Maker’s Notes" differently. The information they dump in MN is different for each camera maker and usually, to all intents and purposes, unreadable by other software, or only readable in a garbled form. The only way round this is for the software developers, whether they be Adobe or Cerious (this problem often comes up in the Thumbs Plus forums) to individually ,as far as they can, translate the information into something readable. Of course, as soon as they have done that, Canon (or any other camera maker) bring out a new camera with a different format and they have to start all over again.

Of course, it’s entirely a coincidence that if you buy the camera maker’s "pro" software (rather than the free stuff included in the box with the camera) the MN suddenly become readable…

Because the B&W setting isn’t RAW. It takes some processing to turn it from color to B&W.

Besides you don’t want to make B&W images that way. There are much better ways to get much better B&W results. I like the one here: http://www.russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html
