IrfanView also does a great job with this and the price is right: Free!

I don’t think Irfanview can add the file name to the image area, which is what the OP asked for, or at least I don’t see it in my copy.

by the way I use the file renamer it’s great

On the subject of using javascript I seem to be lost
I found that in Image Ready I could set a variable
I found myself going round in circles and didn’t grasp the idea (I put it down to my age)
But I am not too old to learn

In 7 it’s under Automate but you need to install the Scripting Plugin from the Adobe site. It may be that the actual script is from the Adobe Exchange.

In CS it’s under File I believe.

To batch you would have to make an action that uses the script I think.
