I have an action that extracts a selection to a new file. Step 1 is a Copy. Step 2 is a Make New Document (Clipboard). Step 3 is Paste. Sometimes, the pasted image doesn’t fit in the new document. This means that step 2 is creating the document to the wrong size. Why is this, and how can I correct it?

Also, why do I get a "Could not complete the command because of a program error," so damned often when converting GS to Bitmap?

you need to add a dialog stop in the action and press enter by hand when the new dialog is up. (check the box next to the action step.) i’ve had to do this for years (since at least v6).

I think this may be related to a similar little quirk I’ve observed, most commonly when I’ve used SnagIt to capture a region of my monitor screen: With SnagIt set to capture the data to the clipboard, selecting New in Photoshop will typically use dimensions corresponding to the last dimensions I specified for a new document, or else it uses the dimensions of the last cut/copy performed during the active editing session. I’d normally expect the New Document dimensions to change to the dimensions established by the image data last placed into the clipboard by SnagIt, but that’s not the case. It doesn’t suprise me too much, given that I’ve performed the capture outside of Photoshop, and the solution is merely that of closing the New Document dialog window and then again creating a New Document. With the 2nd instance of the New Document window, the proper clipboard image data dimensions are used. It’s an oddity I’ve long noticed and never been too concerned by since it was easily worked around.

actually what’s happening is the action is using the doc size that was recorded. (i’ve checked this). by toggling the new dialog, you get the values supplied from the clipboard.

Do you mean my action? If so, that’s not the case. The action palete reports that the step is: Make
New: document
Preset: "Clipboard"

and what size is the created image if you don’t stop the action at the dialog? the size you recorded it at? 🙂

i’m not saying i like it, just that’s the way i’ve always seen it behave. i have my action set to F6 so to get a new doc from the clipboard at the correct size i need to press F6 (to start the action) and Enter (to say "OK" on the new image dialog).
