I am not getting the error, "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"….which leads me away from the fact it could be a extension problem. It’s telling me it is not compatible with this version of photoshop, but I am using the latest, CS. Any other suggestions? I cannot find ANYTHING in the knowledgebase.
Have you tried opening the file in ImageReady (7 or CS)? My guess is that the file is corrupt and will throw errors there as well but it’s worth a try.
I’m getting basically the same message. Everything so far has been something I’ve worked on this year 2004 in JPEG, like adding of border, maybe rotations. I’ve noticed the icon beside of file is also missing some of it’s features ( corel emblem, etc.). This just started happening this week, but I’ve not been into the CS program lately working or changing an image until yesterday. My personal opinion Adobe has a bug in it’s CS and it was on a time delay. My files that have been corrupted, I’ve opened, printed and closed numerous times before without error.
Adobe has posted an update for a this problem, but it hasn’t recovered or repaired my damaged files.
Please HELP!!!!!
What?
We haven’t seen any sign of a bug causing file corruption (but lots of bad disks, RAM and installs).
The only posted update for Photoshop CS is to fix some bugs on multiprocessor systems. It has nothing to do with corrupted files.
Most likely nothing can recover your damaged files – they’re already damaged.
UGH?!
Look at all the things happening in CS and the majority have happened recently. Look at the dates the files have been reworked/updated.
All the ones/files effected in my case are 2004 changes, things I worked or updated in 2003 are not effected. All are JPEG files. These files are not stored in the Photoshop program (Meaning they are on the harddrive in a seperate file). NOT everything I’ve worked on is effected by problem, in my case just things I’ve added an border on.
Things I’ve color corrected or resized aren’t appearring to be having this problem yet. Now just how many "bad disks, RAM and installs" do you really think are actually out there or happening. Uninstalling and reinstalling are ONLY going to reappaer in the amount of time they did before.
It can be called "a bug" or clich or problem (that’s whatever word/s a person would like to call "it"), but seriously CS has got a major problem.
I’m not here to cause a problem or upset anyone and if I have I apologize. The work everyone is creating means a great deal to them and I don’t want to lose anymore files than what’s effected now. I’m just looking for some correct answers and opening some eyes so people can start watching their computers/CS programs.
have you run a scandisk with surface check? have you run defrag? have you opened your machine and blown out the dust with air? have you reseated cards, cables and internal and external plugs?
Considering that fewer than 2 dozen people have reported anything similar – I think that’s less than the number of bad HD, RAM, installs, etc.
If it were a problem in CS, then thousands of users (or more) would be seeing it.
Chris,
I’m sending you and the forum(ees?) an apology. This WAS NOT an CS problem, it just started while I was in CS.
The problem has been solved THANKS to Adobe support @ $39.95 (a small price to pay and get to recover/correct these files.
For some odd reason when saving, Win XP or something doesn’t put on the extention(s), in my case "it" removed ext. from only the 2004 files in that folder (God was watching over me). The support tech did advise this is not the first or only time she had seen "it" happen.
In my case I just need to add the ext. back on and the files will work. Thanks again Adobe Tech and another apology to Chris and the forum.
I have a similar problem. I have photoshop cs. Running windowsXP Pro. After working on a document and saving it as a .psd. I can’t reopen it. I get this error message: "Could not complete your request because it is not a valid photoshop document." Yet I just finished saving it as such. Its in the ‘open recent document’file in ps, but when I click to open it there I get the same message.Help!!!!! All my other photos that were not saved as photoshop documents open. This isn’t happening only to one but the last 3 that I’ve tried. When I go to close what I’m working on ,a window pops up asking me if I wnt to save I click on yes. Saved as a psd. When I go back to open it I get the error message. Have tried save as and saved as a tiff, jpg etc.,but still won’t open because its a psd.
It’s NOT just in CS that this happens! We just updated to 7.01 and we are getting the dreaded "the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop" error with EVERY single file that we open!!! And PLEASE don’t even suggest that it’s a "computer problem". Brand spanking new 3.2 P4 W/3Gigs of CL 2.0 ram. 200 Gig hard drive so it’s got plenty of room. Defrag and scandisk nearly everyday. This is DEFINITELY a Photoshop bug… or at least a Photoshop problem…
Really hope Adobe takes this seriously and finds a fix.
Thank you! 🙂
I have the same problem with 7.0.1. I think Adobe has messed us up with one of their recent auto-updates. If Adobe reps are lurking, I hope they take notice and report the problem to the developers. Maybe I should turn off auto-update… if it can be turned off.
I still have trouble from time to time with PS suddenly deciding to prevent me from using clone and other tools, opening my image as background instead of Layer 1. I got no answer from Adobe’s online help.

I’ve talked to several computer programers and they’re saying it’s not an XP problem because you’re in Photoshop program while saving. I only know what to do if it happens again. ADD THE FILE EXTENTION BACK, BUT MAKE SURE IT’S THE CORRECT EXT. I just hope Adobe gets a fix and let’s us know. It would be an hassle if it got a lot of files at same time.
I’m having a similar issue, only my problem lies with a hard drive failure and a data recovery "specialist". I am trying to open up relatively small files (2-4 megs) for some web projects and unfortunately I am receiving the same error message. How can I fix this? Is there anyway to recover these files?
p.s. i’ve created and am trying to open these files in ps7
