I’ll agree with the above timeframe. BTW, I found Adobe VERY generous recently in a related vein. I purchased CS Premium shortly after it became available. Sometime later, the PageMaker PlugIn Pack for InDesign became available. When I contacted Customer Service, I thought I was in a group that would have to pay a nominal fee for the upgrade, so I ordered it. Afterwards it was determined I was within the free upgrade period. Adobe promptly sent a refund for the full amount.
If your friend likes PSCS, buy it now! If an upgrade is released within a reasonable time, Adobe will probably make accommodations to keep the product current as well. I’m talking about major release, not a "dot" release. Those are free downloads.
