I have a photo where the top half of the photo is quite dark, and the bottom half is quite bright. I have been searching for a way to apply some sort of brightness gradient, but without success.

I want the bottom half of the photo to stay as it is and gradually brighten the top half of the photo. The further up the image I go, the brighter I want it to be made.

Does anyone know how to do this?
Thanks.

Yes, but first try this: Image, adjustments, highlight-shadow

Set both radius values to say 300

then play with the sliders, first setting shadow amount to zero

If that does not do what you want, you will likely need to use a "quick mask" with a gradient, and then apply "curves" or "levels" to that.

Use a curves adjustment layer to brighten the photo so that the top half is the way you want it. Then add a gradient to the mask of that layer so the bottom half of the gradient is black.

My suggestion is for you to use the Gradient tool make two extra layers and work on these. then flatten the image.
