Hi,

I am new to photoshop and hope you guys can help me.

I took a human hand image and would like to make a icon from it. I have my original image and icon image at http://www.outcolorapp.com. As you can see, the icon image is too shinny and lack details. I do not have to use orange color. Just want something standout from the white background and looke comfortable to eyes and attracts attention. Can you guys help me?

Thank you very much,.

you are the same who asked about Black and white?
you should have said up front you need to edit for icon
regular b&w is not what you need

try threshold to make contrasty image from photo or other filter to get a line drawing

even so what you need is an illustration

garbage in =garbage out

you have a bad photo – needs cropping
very poorly cut out
not right for making into a drawing–too much detail for such small result

you need a real artist with experience in SYMBOLS
and who understands scale

Almost everyone who does their first icon makes the same mistake of trying to put too much detail into the image – I certainly did with my first icons.

My first suggestion would be to have a single hand in the image, with an exaggerated large pencil. Since your skill in photography is obviously well developed, I’d light it so that it stands out as well as possible against a light background, stopping short of a silhouette. Color is an important clue, so stay with a relatively unsaturated orange color for the skin tone.

OTOH, now that I mention it, a simple black against white silhouette look to your icons might have an interesting visual impact that would give your app a distinctive look. With a bit of bevel it could be quite interesting. Who knows, with icon design stalling out on the aqua look, you might start a trend. This could be all the rage in a year with Steve Jobs touting silhouetted images on the iPhone buttons as the be all and end all. Wonder what he would name it?

I know … iCons, LOL.
