Am using PhotoShop 6.0, also have Illustrator, MS Office, etc., etc. Have a lot of old WordPerfect 8 graphic files (*.wpg) that are mostly clip-art, but can’t use them since nothing I have will open or enable inserting them.

Is there a way to get Photoshop to open up these wpg files and enable me to save them back down as jpg or bmp? If this is a "plug-in", I wondered if someone might share a sentence on how to install and use a plug-in, I haven’t used any before.

Thanks,
George

Corel Draw can import those graphics and you could then export them as just about anything you want.

If you don’t have Corel Draw, you can download a 30 day fully functional demo.

Thanks Bob, great idea. I was actually looking for something clean and light, like a standalone program/application (shareware?), or something (plug-in?) to use with Photoshop. Or maybe Windows XP has an app built in. That way, I could use it on demand, and also keep the registry clean from a major install/uninstall. I know that older versions of WordPerfect have a converter but I wanted to avoid installing my WP8 since it’s both old and a big application. Would welcome any new ideas, thanks.

Do you actually have Word Perfect? If so you could bring them in there and create a PDF.

Yes, do have WordPerfect, but it’s old and didn’t want to clutter up a new WinXP PC with an old application. (The wpg files are in a separate folder on one of the WP8 CD’s). Also, I don’t need all the wpg files right now, just want to be able to pull them off the shelf at a moment’s notice and convert on demand. Thanks

Do you have Word? I know that Word 2003 can handle WPG files. Create the PDF from there and open in Photoshop.

Thanks Bob, Yes I have Word 2003 and just tried two approaches:

1) File > Open (file.wpg); and

2) Insert > Picture > From File > Convert From (choose file type) > (file.wpg), but neither worked.

The second approach DID list WordPerfect graphics as a "from" type, but then gave an error "An error occurred while…".

Also, I wondered if going from wpg to doc to pdf to jpg (instead of direct wpg-to-jpg) might possibly loose some picture quality along the way? Thanks again for ideas.

George, e-mail me one of the WPG files and I’ll give it a try here.

Bob, thanks. Correction to earlier post, you are correct, the INSERT does work (I may have had a defective wpg). Still wondered if there’s a more direct way to do this.

Also, once the wpg graphic is in word, you can select it, then open up Photoshop, paste it in, then save it down to jpg. Is this a "legitimate" way to get a jpg? Any loss in quality? Also, what resolution would you save it as… maybe "Quality=8" or something else?

One more brief question. There are a few "scb" files (scrapbook, WP calls them) mixed in with all the wpg files. Nothing at all seems to read these *.scb files, got any insights into what these are or how to open/use them? (Glad to email an scb file, but it’s about 2MB, while the wpg files are under 100K usually.) Thanks again.

I wouldn’t paste. IME, there is a significant lose of quality.

Create the PDF and either open it in Photoshop directly or Illustrator and then copy and paste from Illustrator.

I have no idea what the SCB files are but you can check here to see if it’s mentioned:

More than likely that is the file with all the thumbnails for the .wpg files and is used by WordPerfect as a quick index of sorts.

I have WordPerfect 9, I don’t know how similar (I’m fairly sure they are):

1. In WP, select Import|Graphics|Clipart; select your wpg graphic.
1. Right-click on the wpg file, select Drawing Object|Open. Presentations
will open the file. If you have a WordPerfect-only installation and did not install WP Office, you might be sunk.
2. In Presentations, select File|Save Copy As; in the File Type drop-down, select whichever common graphics type you want (tif, pcx, gif, jpg; WP9 has 16 or so to choose from).
