When I open a Nikon NEF file, instead of getting the camera raw dialog as seen in Adobe Photoshop Artistry, I get a simple "RAW Adjustments" dialog that offers me two things:
1. Exposure Comp, and
2. White Balace

All the other Camera Raw goodies were not there. Help!

thats because you have installed probably the nikon capture, just go to plugins folder in photoshop and look for the nef plugin, then hide it in a zip or take it out, then the camera raw window from photoshop will open again

I think CS was the first Photoshop to have RAW adjustment – so it’s pretty klunky. I’m sure when 9 appears the adjustment scope will be the same as PSDs TIFFs and the like.

Nikon does supply it’s own software for this – use that, then export to photoshop later.

It will be more (including curves), but certainly not the same scope as Photoshop has for TIFF and other RGB files. You’ll have to understand that RAW is totally different from any other format, because the image data are not yet demosaiced. If Adobe wanted the RAW converter to have the same possibilities as Photoshop has for TIFF, it would basically have to build a complete Photoshop into the converter.

BTW; support for RAW came with Photoshop 7, although it was a separate plugin ($99) at the time. The only difference with CS was that the plugin was not included for free.

I don’t use the paid version of Nikon Capture. It’s the Nikon View that I downloaded from the Internet, which also does the capture.

Actually it is Nikon’s software that is the problem. Nikon puts its own plug-in that shuts down the much nicer one in PS. And it does this every time you update Capture, too, so you end up having to delete Nikon’s plug-in rather frequently.

FWIW, Nikon’s "RAW" format is really a variant of TIFF.

Nikon NEF is a real RAW format, just like any other RAW format. That means it’s a non-demosaiced format, with only one color per pixel. Yes, the *file format* is based on the TIFF format, but that certainly does not make it "a variant of TIFF".

Adobe Camera RAW was a separate purchase option for Photoshop 7.
