For the last year my website has been running on a photoshop template from monstertemplates.com, but now I am going to create my own. I need to know what size I should make the photoshop image size if I want it to look best at 1024X768 without having to scroll over or down in the browser. Also if anybody has any resources for creating websites in photoshop please tell me. Thanks, Matt S.

Then how about making it 1024×768 pixels?

The cheapest solution, but the most labor intensive, is an editor such as Notepad and a browser such as IE. You will need a book which explains html. Contrary to what you might believe, html is much much easier to master than almost any of the computer languages.

Another inexpensive solution is Netscape which contains a free editor that is much easier to use than the previous one.

Those are the only two that I know much about.

tried that, but it doesn’t work right, too big.

You are going to be able to get the width right, if all your users are using the same browser. You just need to subtract the width from the 1024 (I think it is 23 pixels in IE.)

But as for height, how are you going to determine which combination of tools, menus and palettes a user has. They are all customizable by the user.

build for 800×600 (so make it a bit smaller to account for the scroll bars.) most of the world still views the web at 800×600.

If you mean Internet Explorer, it is not 50 pixels, particularly on the left. It is only a few pixels. And I am pretty sure that the width of the scroll bar on the right is 20 px wide.

Of course, this doesn’t really matter, since some users will have history of favorites panels open on the left, and that will still mess things up.

The proper solution is to make a design that does not depend on any size of screen.

Mine isn’t. Not everybody maximizes their browser windows, either. Most eyecandy things in browsers and operating systems are customizable. If you design for the screen in front of you and the browser you use, you’ll be designing just for you. The Web is not print; it’s a stream medium, where things need to flow, and reflow, to fit all sorts of rendering devices. Soon, when IE7 ships, I’m sure things will look just a little different, again.
