Hello Forum:

I am dealing with a nasty little bugger of a problem that I have on both a Win2k and WinXP machine (different users/computers).

In essence:

Photoshop and Windows appear to be fighting over file ownership of TIF and JPG files. Any application (including explorer) that attempts to open a folder containing these files crashes.

In Pshop, as soon as the folder is opened it crashes. In explorer, the folder will open and the files will all be listed but will initially be represented by the generic Windows flag icon. Those generic icons will then be SLOWLY replaced by the PShop TIF or JPG Icon. About halfway through the list of 40+ files, Explorer crashes and I get a 0x77f8206b Memory could not be Read error. A google of this error results in one entry–and aside from being image related is no help. In other applications, TIF files cause a crash when they are clicked upon (in Quark, for example).

This problem starts randomly (no new software or changes in hardware) and then continues to occur until the computer is reloaded (since I can’t find a fix…). The problem occurs regardless of what user is logged into the system.

I have reset the file types manually to PShop, I have deleted the Prefs file. I’ve logged in as a new user on that workstation.

This is limited to one Win2k machine right now by I’ve seen this on another Win2k (which I reloaded to fix) and a WinXP (same story). My WinXP workstation will open and manipulate the same files with no problems or crashing, so I doubt it’s corruption.

Any ideas? My guess is it could be file type, but I’m open to any solutions.

Paul,
There seems to be an issue with PSICON.DLL
Find and rename it to .OLD or whatever, reboot and check again. Rob

This is a known Windows bug. I’ve seen this and the solution was to reset the file associations to the Windows defaults rather than associating with Photoshop by uninstalling and reinstalling PS Elements (in this particular case) but not changing associations on the reinstall.

Mick & Rob-

Thanks for your input.

I did precisely what you said, Mick and, aside from the minor inconvenience of having to manually re-setup the file types after PShop was uninstalled, it was perfect and painless. Thank you!

Note to self–do not press the ALL to PHOTOSHOP button during setup.

For my own information, is this a Win2k/XP-only problem or does it happen on the 98/Me systems as well? Interestingly enough, during my google searches I found a similar problem happens on Macs running PShop 7.

Glad that helped Paul. The machine I saw it on is one I use at work (not graphics) – a 1 GHz Celeron with 256 Mb of RAM running XP Pro. We uninstalled the OS and various other things before trying what I suggested above. I’ve not heard of it before on anything but XP.
