This is a curious problem because it seems to be intermittent…

I have a small network of 4 PCs, but generally only use two of them, unless something special crops up. PC1 is my main workststion with CS; PC2 is a print server running Shiraz RIP. Therefore I scan/edit/tweak images on PC1 and then copy the image to PC2 to print it.

The problem is that [most of the time] PSCS wont start up if PC2 is not switched on and running. Its very annoying to have to switch on 2 PCs to get CS to work. It hangs up after the dreaded "Reading Text Global Resources… Done" message appears.

I realise this may be a network problem, but can anyone shed any light, please? The other thing is that *sometimes* CS WILL start normally, even if PC2 is off.

I tried deleting prefs etc, which seemed to fix it for a while, but the problem came back after I had used PC2. It seems that once CS knows about PC2, it needs to have it there. Yes there are shared printers on PC2 and I need them.

Is there a time-out setting that I can tweak or anything?

Thanks a lot.

Brian

I posted a similar problem a few days ago in that PSCS was taking ages to get to the splash screen before loading, and creating new files would take over 3 minutes. It would solve itself it I unplugged the network cable. I finally tracked down the problem to a print server that had changed the IP address of the attached printer ( a power cut) but the PC had a different address as the default printer. Getting that right cured the problem. I think having the print server set to a static rather than an auto address keeps it simple.

Does this help?

In similar vein of Gary’s suggestion, is default printer on that machine a network printer on another machine?

If so, try setting your default printer to local one. Just one set to FILE will do.

Thanks for your responses.

Mac, the default printer is actually on PC1, so I don’t see that as the cause of the problem.

Rather I feel that Gary may be on the right lines. I haven’t tried to unplug the network cable, but that’s not really the cure I was hoping for. The four PCs on my network all have static IP addresses. I can see that CS is looking for the PC2 machine on the network, the Task Manager shows network activity as CS starts up and the lights on the hub blink a lot until PC2 is running.

Its an annoyance, as PC2 has a particularly noisy CPU fan! I don’t know what CS is doing after its ‘Done’ loading the Global Font Resources, but if there was a way to find out perhaps it may be possible to edit a setting somewhere (?)

Any other ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks.

somewhere you’ve got a link/shortcut to PC2, or some connection to a device on PC2.

Photoshop isn’t doing anything that would need the network, but your OS can when you have links/shortcuts or have specified devices on another system.

Thanks Chris. I’m sure its a network problem rather that a Photoshop problem – I’ll see if I can find out more.

I’m not sure if this would even be a factor. But is there any chance that you have your scratch disk designated on PC 2?
