Hi,
I have just been reading about the new Photoshop CS feature ‘Auto Crop and Straighten’ in the June issue of NAPP magazine (pages 46 – 47).

However, no matter how many times I have tried this feature I just cannot get it to work!

I started off with five assorted images without success, but then dropped down to two images (2 small postcards at 25-degree angles and a single stamp.

To obtain my initial scan in Photoshop CS (which I do through: a Canon 5000F scanner), and import the scan through the Photoshop ‘File|Import| CanonScan’ menu, I then go to The ‘File|Automate|Crop and Straighten|Photos’ function, where it then simply presents me with an identical document to the original!

Personally I don’t think this feature works at all.

My scanner has a white coloured background on the underside of the scanner fold down lid and is not green as shown in the article, but other than this, their are no other differences.

Can anybody here or advise me please?

I am using a CanonScan 5000F on an AMD 2100+ system with 1GB Ram and am running Windows XP Pro

Thanks
Andrew

Actually, I use Perspective to accomplish the task. Crop as best as possible, click the Perspective box then use the corners to pull in to the edges. Very accurate.

Andrew – it works just fine for other people.

It sounds like you might have some sort of border around the whole scan (which makes it look like a single image), or a VERY noisy scanner (that makes it look like a single image).

Andrew,
It works like magic with my Canonscan 8000F. After you have imported the image do you click on it to open it? It won’t work if you don’t.

Ditto Andrew,

It works fine for me. My aging HP ScanJet 6200C has a very shiny piece of foam backed white plastic glued to the inside of the lid. It’s as shiny as the white border on real photographic prints (remember those?).

Lawrence, Yes I can see that it is working for other people, but just like many other threads with a given problem, on this forum, this one does not work for me! 😉 And Although like you I normally use the Crop tool with perspective, I just would like to see it work for me, after all, as I said in my original posting, I read an article in NAPP’s June magazine raving about its virtues, and as I had not known about it, I was intrigued.

Chris, I have checked to make sure no border is around any of the images in the scan; also Auto selection is turned off in ScanGearCS. The platen Plate is spotless, but has been checked just to be sure, and there is no noise in the scans themselves, in fact the initial scans are excellent.

Roger, I My CanonScan 8000F has never given me a problem in the year I have had it, and as I have said previously, I was intrigued to see if it did work. As for opening the scan it’s already open when the scan finishes, but I do click on it to make sure it’s selected. I have also tried saving the initial scan, and then running AutoCrop feature.

So everyone, their it is, I still cannot get it to work, and as I appear to be very much in the minority on this particular problem, I can live with it (or should that be with out it?).

Thanks anyway for trying to help.

Kindest regards

Andrew
