Saving a file as png with alpha channels

Would someone tell me how to save a file in png format with alpha channels? When I create my alpha channel and try to save as png, the alpha channel save option is not active and the resulting png file has no alpha channel.

PNG does not support arbitrary alpha channels. It supports only a single alpha transparency.

Create your image in such a way that it is transparent, then use File->Save for Web to turn the transparency into a PNG alpha transparency.
