There are various books you can purchase, and tutorials online, etc. which the nice people in here will direct you to. From my own personal experiences, I have been doing photo restoration for quite a few years and I believe just experimenting with different tools and working out your own techniques is the way to go. Read some tutorials to simply "point you in the right direction", but develop your own methods from there. The reason why I say this is that I have read tutorials (now as an experienced restorer) and I often find the methods suggested are not the quickest and best ways to do things. I read a long winded method to do something that really required a lot less steps and a little more commonsense.

Two good resources I’ve found:

"Photoshop Restoration & Retouching" by Katrin Eismann, and the forum at www.retouchpro.com

Thanks Brian,
I agree, practice is everything. I am past the basics but not yet a "pro" and looking to expand my repertoire of techniques. As I become more confident with the them I will experiment and hopefully discover the shotcuts just as you have. Thanks for your advice

Thanks Ornette. It seems Eismann’s is to Retouching as Margulis is to Color Correction.

And while you’re at it, as Fraser et al is to Colour Management 😉
