Could somebody please recommend or preferably post an Adobe Photoshop plug-in for B&W conversions? Something that will work well for portrait photography. Thanks.

I don’t think a plugin is required. I get excellent results by converting the image to lab color and then using the Lighness channel for the B&W image. For even more control, duplicate the layer and set the blend mode to Multilpy, then fiddle with the opacity of the top layer until you get what you want.
