Is it possible to take in image I already have and set it as a new pattern? I’m having a very hard time trying to figure this out. I have Photoshop 6.0 and am working with XP.

how do you mean a new pattern?

it is fairly easy: select the image, and go to edit>define pattern

Thank you so much! Here is my next problem. I have a leather texture which I would like to use as a frame border in a publication. When I set it as a pattern (which was easy) and then apply it to a new page, it’s HUGE! I need it to be smaller and look more like a large piece of leather with lots of grain. Is that possible?

I purchased an image of leather texture and need to apply it as a pattern so I can use it in a publication.

Barbara,

1 pixel in your pattern will display as 1 pixel in your document. Decrease the size of your pattern file from image>image size with resample on before creating your pattern.

What am I changing the image size to? how small should I go? When I apply the pattern at scale of about 40%, I get definite lines like a grid. How do I make these go away and make it all look like one solid piece?

Barbra,

When I apply the pattern at scale of about 40%, I get definite lines like
a grid. <<

That’s inherent in that particular pattern, and can happen for two different reasons. One is if the pattern does not tile seamlessly – that is the left and right sides (or the top and bottom) do not create a continuous pattern when joined. That can often be cured by using the Offset filter with wraparound and the clone tool to ensure edges will match

The other is when the centre of the tile and the edges of the tile are distinctly different, because then, although the tiles may join seamlessly, there will be a distinct pattern of tiles
