Hello All;
I am fairly new to Photoshop and I have a question that is probably very simple to answer but it hasn’t become obvious to me yet.

I am importing a .jpg image into Photoshop 7 which is basically a drawing (In one color) on white paper. All I need to do is to make the White space transparent so that I can overlay the drawing (Which is black or dark shades of gray) on a background and the background will show through with only the drawing on top. The black drawing should not become transparent, of course.

What is the best way to go about doing this in PS 7.0 ? Thanks.

Tim

Tim,

It kind of depends on when/where you intend to do the layering. In Photoshop, just put the drawing on a layer above the background and change the drawing layer’s blend mode to Darken.

If you want to make all the white in the drawing transparent for placement over a background in another application, well that opens a whole other can of worms, depending on what the other application is.

You want to dislpay the image on a web page and have the background show thru where the drawing is white – correct? You must save it is GIF or PNG format. GOF sounds better because the image has few colors in it from your description. Select File->Save for Web. Select the GIF option and turn on ther transparency option.

You might start by opening your new project with a transparent canvis ang begin layering your drawing over that.
