I was recently asked to potentially undertake a graphics project which has the makings of being beyond my bailiwick. In short, though I would love to assist with this project where I can, I know not where to begin, apart from tossing out a few pleading questions w/hopes of being answered w/solutions my two brain cells can handle (if not simple direction to Photoshop Tutorials for Dummies).

a) Would I require Adobe Illustrator to achieve sculpted lines similar to this graphic? [http://www.womentodaymagazine.com/images/headerhomepage.jpg]

b) How do designers achieve rounded/blended edges, via tedious use of the blur tool?

c) How was the shadow implemented? Tell me this isn’t the result of a meticulous paint job; tell me that Photoshop has a feature enabling users to add shadow to a particular layer, set the direction of its cast, etc.

I have on hand the Photoshop 5.5 Wow! book (as correlates w/my version), though given that I do not retain much from books, that any preexisting Photoshop know-how was learned thru mild tinkering (and is limited to photo editing)–I seem to be a visual learner who requires excessive demonstration and babying–reading portions of the book has not had its desired effect.

Any suggestions and/or advice to stick to what I know (which, again, accumulates to next to nothing) is appreciated.

Thank you,

Hannah Subra

The smarter and more prudent course to follow is to learn the applications, then go looking to take on projects.

Short and sweet, not meant to be mean or dismissive, but even if you are given some pointers toward the info you seek today, as the project goes along you’ll have more questions, to be sure. One of the important things to know is how to anticipate and plan the project from the end use backwards, because what you do early on in its development will greatly influence—or possibly even stop you dead in your tracks—later on.

Since we aren’t able to look at fine details of the project you want to embark upon, we couldn’t possibly anticipate what you’ll be needing to do.

I think you are wise to seek help now. And Phosphor
gave you good advice about starting from the end
product and working backwards. There are things that
you can create that just will no print, as an example. But I do think you can do this judging from the graphic that you linked to. If you aren’t going to get into too much troulbe for not being able to finish the project on your own, I encourage you to try, especially if there isn’t a more qualified person to do the job in your place of business.

Here’s a short tutorial Hannah:

The surprisingly prompt results of an evening’s tinkering: [ img <http://www.unpoedic.com/tmp/mock.jpg> ]

Granted, not much to drool over (nor, this being a mock up, was a salivary reaction my aim); but a start.

Thank you thank you; your combined efforts have been invaluable. Here’s to playing. 😉
