We have an existing file format plugin for the TPL format, which is used in the video game industry. This plugin was working correctly under Photoshop 6.0.

We’ve recently upgraded to Photoshop CS, and whenever I opened a TPL image (which used this plugin), the following error message would occur twice:

"Could not load tool presets because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop".

I figured that this was just because my plugin was an older 6.0 plugin. But now I have re-created the file-format plugin using the updated sample code from the CS SDK, and I am still getting the same problem. Can anybody tell me what I’m doing wrong? I did a search through the forums for that error message and didn’t find anything.

Thanks in advance!

..tpl is the file extension used by tool preset files.

Photoshop is trying to parse the file as a tool preset file instead of using your custom file format plugin.

(when we did a search on uses for .tpl, we didn’t find any – and you can thank whomever decided to use 3 character file extensions for file types for this mess)

Oh, crap. Is there anything I can do about this?

Change your file extension, lodge a complaint with Microsoft, etc.

aka: not much.

Oh, or use a Macintosh where the file extension isn’t nearly so important as the 4 byte file type.
