I have noticed that for some reason the way in which text can be inserted over an image in photoshop is not consistent.
Sometimes when you press the type tool and start writing on an image, the text appears as a new separate layer in the layers table of contents. This gives you the option to manipulate the text in various ways (i.e. putting shadow on it, etc.)
However at other times when you do the exact same thing, the text ends up in the same original layer (it also has a strange flashing dash border around the text). This is so annoying as not only does it then not allow you to do stuff to the text, but the overall quality of the text is much worse. Why is this? It is nothing to do with the type of image as I have tried it with .bmp, .gif and .psd and I get the same problem at random with the image.
Obviously there is some setting that I do not know about that deals with this but what is it?
