I just tried to open and old PS file with many layers (from 1999, not sure if it’s 4.0 or 5.0 PS)
A flattened PSD from that era will open but the layered PSD gives an error, when it opens it says something about not reading the file, should it composite it, I say yes and it won’t open.
I still have my old PS versions but do i have to install them to open this? will it mess up my current install of PS CS?

You could try using my PSD->PNG extraction tool, which may recover the layer data for you:
http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/files/psd2png-1.3b2.zip (Windows build). Download and extract that file, and drag’n’drop the PSD on to it. You should get a folder with layers as PNGs.

OS X or Linux users can build from source at Subversion repository http://www.telegraphics.com.au/svn/psdparse/branches/psdpars e_cj/ .

What OS/platform? Do the files have the correct extension on them? Files from that era should open easily in 7 or CS.

What is the error it gives?

We can’t help you if you say you get an error but don’t tell us what the error message actually says.

Photoshop CS can read layered Photoshop images going all the way back to Photoshop 3.0, so most likely those particular Photoshop files are corrupt and unusable.

Thank you TOBY. I got that program and it changed my doc to a PNG. Unfortunately the PNG looked blank. I was able to successfully open other files but that file I first tried must be corrupt. (I had copied old files to CD after an old JAZZ drive failed and the data must be corrupt. I think it isn’t a PS error after all, just a bad copy.
A very clever little utility that PNG extractor.
