Has anyone experienced this?
I have photoshop 7.0 and it has been working fine. About 2 weeks ago – while doing the automatic adobe upgrade – the whole program shutdown – and I havent been able to open it since.
I have tried several simple ways of trying to fix the problem… and no luck. I uninstalled – and reinstalled. I have tried a system restore to an earlier date, nada. Which means by doing this – I have no conflicting programs. As I have checked over and over – I cant even find a virus to blame.
The other Adobe programs were not affected – just photoshop. Any ideas as to how I can get it to open?
Thanks ahead of time!

Art, I realize that you have re-installed the program, but have you also deleted the PS Prefs? This is usually the first step, before an uninstall/ reinstall. Now, to your exact question, I have never had a problem with an online update, going back to about v5. Seems that before that time, one just did a download, extract, install and not the more automatic update.

Thanks for the response Hunt.
Yes, I even delete the PS preferences – and after reinstalling Photoshop…it did the same thing…
It starts to load, then completely closes out.
No code / reason is given as to why.
Its just frustrating. I have no idea what to do
I havent seen anything related to it in the search engines for troubleshooting.

I agree. Trashing prefs is the first step when Photoshop acts weird and reinstalling keeps the old preferences file so it usually won’t solve problems. As for your specific problem:

Disconnect entirely from the internet and open Photoshop, go into Edit>Preferences>Adobe Online and set the updating to Never. There are no updates to 7 (besides the 7.0.1 update which you can download from the Adobe site). There has been a bug with the Adobe server which causes this problem.

OK, here’s what to look for first – a corrupt font. I assume that the "hang" comes while the PS splash screen is still up. If so, that will help, if not, then you may have even more investigative work ahead. In the splash screen, there is one line that changes, all the rest, the credits, etc. stay the same. The moving/changing line shows what is being loaded in PS. It can go by quickly, so you have to watch closely, and maybe several times. Note what is being loaded, just as the hang happens. Let’s hope that it is loading fonts. PS is very critical of corrupt fonts. Many programs will let them pass and not whimper, until you try to use one, but not PS. If that one line says "… loading fonts… " then you know you are on the right track. Someone here had a great idea about how to find the offending font, but I cannot recall exactly what it was – maybe Google.Groups Search can give you that info. Anyway, you may have to copy ALL of your fonts (they will be in several locations on a Win machine – OS, PSFonts folder, TTFonts folder, Adobe Fonts folder, really all over. Copy them to another folder for safe keeping. One method would be to remove them all, except for the mandatory machine/OS fonts, and start re- installing them, firing up PS, as you go. If/when it hangs, then one in THAT batch is corrupt. Alrights guys and girls, maybe you have a surefire workaround, that will save Art even more time. NOW is when you should chime in, as re-installing tons of fonts can take days.

If it is a Plug-in (older 3rd party ones for PS < whatever you have now, CS?) can also cause a hang. Try removing them. The included Plug-ins should be OK, especially if you did a re-install.

Beyond those two thoughts, not much else occurs to me, but watching that one line might give you a clue. Remember, it goes by quickly, so you can’t look away, or answer the phone. Watch it carefully.

Good luck,
Hunt

PS, if the hang happens AFTER the Splash Screen, and you are on XP with CS, you might just want to give the program a few seconds after the "hourglass" disappears. Watch it carefully, and you might see it come back very quickly two, or more times. I don’t know what goes on here, as older versions of PS were "good to go," the instant that the hourglass turned into the cursor, but CS still has some things loading, regardless of what the cursor looks like. I usually get a sip of coffee here, so I don’t impatiently try to Open, or something, as that can cause a hang.

Art excuse me for my blathering on about CS. After reading edjh’s comment, I realized that you stated PS 7. I had forgotten that part from your original post – sorry.

As edjh states, if you do not have 7.0.1 update, you do need to get it. It seems that it came as an EXE, but at this late date, I do not recall with clarity. When I did it, it was a simple update.

Normally, this indicates you have a corrupt font on your computer.

When you start Photoshop, look closely at the screen. You will see text messages flash by on the splash screen describing what is going on–"Reading preferences," "Measuring memory," "Reading fonts," and so
on. What does it say when it crashes?

You know you guys are ALL great – and I appreciate the ideas.

I havent the cash to get CS yet – so I am still working with 7.0 Maybe after summer if I can swing it, I will look into getting it. After all this bullsh*t.. it’s looking prettyyyyyyyyy damn good.

I deleted the library as instructed in some topics, and rid the PS preferences. I re-installed PS 7 in the safe mode. ImageReady works fine as usual. I also turned clicked NEVER in the online preferences. PS7 will not load – EXCEPT in safe mode – which you KNOW is not convenient.

I tried several times (actually it was over a few dozen times) to install the new update. Each time that I have tried to – it comes up with a message that 7.0.1 can not find Photoshop 7 – and tells me to reinstall PS 7 from the original disks (again)! I can see 7.0 in there – but it isnt being recognized.

As a few of you mentioned, it IS during the spash – that it decides to hang. It DOES load the fonts in. It is after loading brushes, and then into loading color preferences -when PS decides that she’s not opening her doors – and shuts down.

Any last suggestions before I throw PS into the ice crusher and make a Frozen Margarita out of her?

Peace.

Art, I take mine on the rocks with a ton of salt! <G>

OK, it looks like the hang is with color Prefs. When you did the rename (or whatever save device that you used on Prefs) did you ALSO rename/delete your Color Prefs? Maybe someone will correct me, if I am wrong, but there are actually set of Prefs – your basic settings, and then Color Prefs. Before I go and tell you to delete something that you really need, get Tacit, or Hecate, or edjh to refresh my memory, as to the exact name of the second Prefs file in v 7.0. My guess is that THIS is the bad file, and it too, like main Prefs file, will not be replaced with a re-install. Don’t get rid of 7.0, soon to be
7.0.1, I’m sure. I think you are just one Pref file from success.

Tacit,

It appears that it is the Color Settings, that are causing this person a problem. He/she has removed the Perfs file, but what is/was the name of the Color Prefs file in v7.0? I don’t have a copy handy right now, but am sure that you, or some other kind soul, will remember the TWO Prefs files.

The OP seems to get well past Fonts, and into Color, when the hang occurs.

Thanks,
Hunt
