I have read in this forum about the use of channels for the extraction of hair from a background, Are there any good tutorials on this subject that can show a novice like me the use of channels to di this feat?I did a google search and all I get is the use of the extraction filter, Does not do a very good job on hair.

Larry try a Google search on Photoshop channel masking. This should give you several tutorials.
