Today when I went to put in a PS7.0.1 duotone I received a message saying the program could not locate the "duotone options because the specified color book cannot be found." Some duotones (Tri’s and Quad’s too) did work, but most did not. Anyone have an idea of what’s going on here? Everything used to work fine before the upgrade to 7.0.1. Thanks

Sanford,

Sounds like the file references spot colours for which you do not have the relevant spot colour library installed.

Thanks, Len. Any idea of how I get them installed? Reinstall PS 7.0? Or another way?

Sanford,

Reinstall PS 7.0? <<

Well that should do it, but it is something of a retrograde step. I know of no reason why you should have lost any colour libraries….

Take a look at your PS7\Presets\Color Books folder.

The default libraries are:

ANPA Color.acb
DIC Color Guide.acb
FOCOLTONE.acb
HKS E.acb
HKS K.acb
HKS N.acb
HKS Z.acb
PANTONE metallic coated.acb
PANTONE pastel coated.acb
PANTONE pastel uncoated.acb
PANTONE process coated.acb
PANTONE solid coated.acb
PANTONE solid matte.acb
PANTONE solid to process.acb
PANTONE uncoated.acb
TOYO Color Finder.acb
TRUMATCH.acb

and all those should be present

Alas, not one is there. The folder is there, but there’s nothing inside it. Sme with folders named: Color Swatches, Optimized Colors and Optimized Settings.

Sanford,

Do a complete un-install / re-install and then run the 7.01 updater again

Len, thanks. All the files have returned home, but I think I’ll pass on the updater.

DO NOT pass on the 7.0.1 updater.

It fixes some things and is as stable as plain old 7.0.

Go get it.

Well, I thought so too, until for some reason or other the duotone helpers vanished. I don’t know if what .01 adds will be particularly useful for me. What of the new features do you find helpful?

Sanford,

It’s not a case of ‘New Features’ but of bug fixes, some of which are definitely recommended!

Sounds like you deleted or moved some of the color book files from the presets folder.

Chris, I am not sure what happened but everything is cool once gain after I removed the program and re-installed. I don’t know if was directly connected to the .01 upgrade but I suspect it was. PS7 worked fine for me before and I think I’ll pass re-upgrading, at least for now.

It is not connected to the .01 update, and you really need to install the 7.0.1 update.

Chris,

Sanford can obviously do what he wants. Presumably, he understands that his decision to not install the latest update severely limits the help available to him — either with Adobe support or here among users — down the road should he encounter other problems.

Dear Appleman and Cox,

I could certainly download .01 again, but I am not sure why I should, why I need it. Chris says I do, but doesn’t say what benefit there is to me. He says it had nothing to do with the problem I encountered with duotones. How does he know? I assume you both have the upgrade. And it has worked fine for you. Is that right? Let me know. — A reluctant upgrader.

The 7.0.1 update fixes several major bugs in Photoshop 7.0.

I know because it doesn’t touch the duotone code or the color books (which you were missing) and because nobody else has seen such a problem.

The fact that you had the problem about the time you applied the patch is just coincidence.

Sanford,

I do indeed use 7.0.1 and have the full range of duotone options available to me. (I just did a duotone with a metallic ink for a brochure cover the other day.)

How does Chris know? Click on his name, or take a close look at the splash screen as Photoshop starts up.

As I opined, it’s your choice. My point is simply that if you choose not to apply the update and you then come back here with a problem for which the answer is ‘apply the patch’… well… you get the point.

Thanks to you both. I shall give it another try…once I can get the ZoneAlarm program to quit being so buggy. Best way to do that is to get a different program. Any suggestions to this major off-topic query? Thanks.

Nothing to add, except that I love the title of this thread. Like graphic designers on a journey.

If not, what resolution from despair.

In today’s Web-centric world, Milton might have written, "If not, what pixel dimensions from despair."

Not likely. Milton cannot be considered pixelated. Nor can PS be equated with paradise, I reckon.

If I may post a somewhat dumb question… I have 7.0 and read the threads about the updaye to 7.01. I can’t really remember if I’ve done this or not. Of course I can do it again, I guess, but is there a way to see if it is already there? When I go to PS properties it just says 7.0 and when I scan my C drive I don’t see anything (noticeable) that looks like the name of an update. Is the update listed somewhere obvious? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Check the splash screen. In small type the number 7.0.1 will there somewhere, though I don’t recall exactly where.
