I have recently upgrade to a 2.7 ghz with win98 still in place. My photoshop 5.5 crashes continuously. Is it the speed of the processor?????

You’re wasting that computing power with Win98, but the processor shouldn’t be causing a crash.

How about some more system details and crash details.

I have 256 DDR SRAM, a 32MG S# ProSavage 8 graphics card.

The cash only occurs on Photoshop, and any time I do anything with a tool, or open up a big file. It is a hard crash needing a hard restart.

I was told Photoshop 5.5 couldn’t handle that processor (2.7ghz)but before I upgrade both versions and system (to XP) I want to make sure it isn’t a fault motherboard or ram.

Has anyone else run Photoshop 5.5 on a 2.7 ghz processor?

Help!!!

Does it lock the whole machine to the point that cntl-alt-del doesn’t work? That would indicate a hardware defect.

Yes, Photoshop 5.5 can handle that processor (and more) just fine. It’s not optimal for HyperThreading, but it runs without any problems.

If you haven’t installed the Windows 98 shutdown patch, go to the MS site, and search for "Q239887".

This patch is required for Windows 98, and computers running faster than about 900MHz–without it, your hard drive can be left in quite a mess if the computer shuts-down before all data is written to the drive.

While you’re at it, you might as well get the "UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service Pack" from here:

You are also wasting that processor having such a small amount of RAM as you will be using virtual memory instead of taking advantage of the processor’s speed. It’s pretty cheap to add 512 Mb of RAM these days. You would be better with a slower processor and more RAM.

I’d suggest moving to WinXP as well if you can afford it. It’s far far superior to Win 98 as an OS.
