cant apply selective color and most filters

i am scanning high quality tiffs in vuescan software and when i open them in photoshop i cant apply lets say, selective color and most filters….what did i do wrong in vuescan or what do i need to do to make it right?

A common error – your image is probably 16-bit. Just go to Mode and change to 8-bit.

but does it loose its quality that way?

A common error – your image is probably 16-bit. Just go to Mode and change to 8-bit.

You lose some of the dynamic range in color… But what are you scanning? Film? Photos? What is your final output going to be to? Print? Web? If so, do your brightness/contrast adjustments first (if necessary) and then convert to 8-bit.

i am scanning from film and the output would be print!

In that case, you won’t lose quality by converting to 8 bits/channel after you do your color correction with Cuves. Printing devices generally only accomodate 8 bit images anyway.

When you say "for print," do you mean "to be printed on a printing press" or "to be printed on an inkjet printer"?
