Sounds like they are 16 bit.
Change to 8 or use Save For Web if web images are the purpose.

Thanks Mac,
I am sarting to get it.
I tried your suggestion (Ifran View) from my other posting re: batch conversion tif to jpg. The Conversion worked like a charm.
Thanks
Mark
Iview can’t do 16 bit, so converted to 8 as it opened each TIFF.
If you converted to 8 bit in Photoshop, you could also save as JPEG, (I’m assuming that the 16bit was the problem).

Is there any freeware out there that will convert 16 bit TIF files to jpg?
Mark
Mark,
Mac’s suggestion was that PS can do that.
Rob
I don’t believe the JPG format supports 16-bit data, Mark. And even if there were such a thing, what would be the purpose?
Yes, the afore mentioned IrfanView does it.
Photoshop will do it with a recorded action.
Action would simply change mode to 8bit and Save As jpeg.
Photoshop will do it with Save For Web (maybe, it can only start with images up to a certain size, not sure what that size is, so perhaps impractical).
Mac
I repeat…for what reason would you WANT a 16-bit JPG?
Dennis,
Nobody suggested to have a 16 bit JPEG. The problem is that Mark wants to convert his 16 bit TIFF’s to 8 bit JPEG’s, and he searches for a program that can do that.
Maybe it is me, but it’s said more than once that he doesn’t need an additional program because his Photoshop does the conversion perfectly.
Maybe I’m getting old but this thread reads as if every odd reply is missing. Reactions look as if they reply to another post than the preceding one. Either that or nobody (me included) reads anymore.

Dennis,
I scanned several thousand slides and saved them in BMP or TIF formats (I was using a Minolta 5400 scanner – the software limits my file options). I fixed the image imperfections in Photoshop, and since I was working with the 16 bit TIF’s, I could only save the files as TIF’s in Photoshop. I wanted to keep roughly 1000 images in TIF for publishing purposes (so I scanned them at higher resolutions and 16 bit). I scanned most of the images in a batch mode (4 at a time).
So I have many large 16 bit files. The other images (say 3000) don’t need to be large, high quality files so I thought I’d convert them to JPG’s and make them readily viewable for family and friends. It takes much longer to load the big TIF files than the smaller JPG’s.
Anyway, I thought I’d use the batch command in Photoshop to convert the larger TIF files into the JPG’s for simple viewing purposes. I am keeping the high quality images for myself. I hope this clarifies….
Sorry if I sounded strident, but I guess I didn’t get the whole picture. Of course you can save as JPG, but in Photoshop you’ll need to create an action – as mentioned – that changes the mode to 8-bit as part of the process.
