When I first installed Photoshop 4 on my mom’s computer (couldn’t find my 7.0 disc) it worked fine, then it was having issues finding a driver. So I got those drivers and that fixed the problem. Then the program starts and shuts down automattically. I deleted the preference file and it fixed it for about a week. Now it starts crashing as it loads the preferences, at least I think that’s when it stops pretty much right when the photoshop screen opens it gives me an error message. I’ve tried the preferences trick again and again and it doesn’t help.

I’m on a Windows XP PC, the computer is only a few months old and I’ve looked through the FAQ again and again, same with the forums, and I’m having no luck

Did you load in updated fastcore and mmxcore. 4.0 is not pentium friendly, or nt xp friendly.I posted these under alt.binaries.test under Photoshop
4.0.
They belong in plugin extensions, delete or allow to go over old fast core.

Can only tell you that not too many folks seem to get 4 to run on XP very well.
First, you need 4.01 (and .01 download isn’t at Adobe anymore).

Also, if you have over 512MB RAM, that usually makes it crash (but think you get a "not ENOUGH RAM message" usually).

Also, I think I read where the type of RAM might matter also.

Anyway, it’s really antiquated stuff. You’d be better off with Photoshop Elements.
