All my software was lost in a recent virus attack on my computer. So I had to reinstall PS. I chose custum settings and clicked everything including all font settings. When I went to create text in a file I discovered, to my horror, that I had about 30 fonts! This is maybe one-fifth or less of what I had in the original installation. What happened to the rest of my fonts and what can I do to get the original bunch back???

Thanks for your help.

To my knowledge, Photoshop 5.5 didn’t have any more fonts than any other version: which is to say, none.

Whatever fonts you had were probably installed by various other programs. You do know that fonts are installed on system and are available for EVERY program, right?
