On one of my XP boxes a strange thing has happened to the crop tool.

Say I have a big image and I want to crop a 7 inch wide by a visually pleasing hight….

If I set the crop tool to 7 inches wide and leave the hight and res blank, I should be able to draw my crop to any proportion I wish (7×2, 7×7, 7×100), but it isn’t working that way now.

On this box the hight is invisibly preset. Lately it is the same as the width so it only makes a square, but it used to make a very thin (7×1?) crop box.

Any guesses?

That bug was mentioned here couple months ago, and I could duplicate it in PS 7. Seems other poster had it in CS. Can’t remember. Which version you have?

Best I remember, resetting prefs didn’t work. But try that. Also try setting both width and height, make a crop. Then clear crop tool. Then put in just the width and see if it behaves.

I have CS… (I must have edited that part out, ooops)

I read that thread from back in April, but it got so far off on a side street about resizing and pixels, that the original question got lost.

I never "saved" any crop settings as mentioned in that other post. I don’t want to try to get it to screw up on my other boxes for fear of never getting it back to normal again :-p

I can’t actually recall if it ever worked on that particular box. I tried setting, resetting and clearing the Prefs, but nothing helped. I haven’t reinstalled CS yet. I may.
