I’ve had the same problem with some images from my Powershot S30. All images were taken at full resolution and no other setting were changed and I have not been able to figure out why the resolution was chnaged (randomly). I normally use an action to set lvl’s, curves, saturation, etc. so I simply inserted a command in the beginning that set the resolution at 300 (or whatever you want). I would be interested in finding our why this happens but my work-around solution functions well and I don’t even notice it.

I guess I should elaborate a little more. I’m certain that the sizes of the images (dpi) are consistent coming from the camera because, due to the way we process a batch, the originals, meaning the images that have not been run through the action, remain in an "inbox" folder whereas the processed images get saved to an "outbox" folder. We were able to open up all the orginal images and they were ALL 200dpi yet about a dozen (out of 50) of the processed images came out to be 300dpi! Makes no sense to me whatsoever.
It got stranger though as I had the tech save the bad batch and run the same group through again, doing minor retouching but essentially the same thing. This time they all came out as 200dpi. So the only clue is the fact that it worked right after Photoshop took it upon itself to reset all the preferences. So perhaps Photoshop sensed something wrong configuration-wise and its resetting itself cleared the problem up, at least until it happens again.
To see where the problem might be happening, I’m going to try to insert a stop in the action that will allow the tech to briefly check the resolution just before saving their work and going on to the next image. This will give us a chance to halt the batch and take a look at that image’s history then maybe we can see where it was changed from 200 to 300 (or whatever) dpi, I hope.

Yes I checked the originals for both those that stayed at 200dpi and those that jumped to 300dpi and they are all 200dpi and the same pixel size; the camera setup is static for all our images. Compression level is moot as these are TIF format images. Thanks.
