Unwanted file size reduction

I recently acquired Photoshop Album and Photoshop 7. I have been using PS Album to enhance photographs from a Canon A70 for a few months and am very impressed. However I have recently needed to edit a few shots in PS 7 and something annoying is happing to the file size when the edited shot comes back to PS Album.

The editing amounts to no more than rubber stamping out some unwanted detail but if a 2Mb JPEG goes across then typically only an 600Kb JPEG file comes back. This is despite keeping the slider controls at "maximum" 12, large file for highest quality (Baseline "Standard") when closing the file.

As I want to then produce conventional prints at around 9" x 6", I presume this will make a difference to the quality. Can anyone please point me in the right direction.
Thanks. Derek Dodds Ireland (Dell with XP)

I don’t know what is going on between PS and Album but is the actual pixel count being changed? If not, then there is something funny going on with the compression.

However, the real question is why are you using Album as an image editor when you have Photoshop? It would make more sense to use Photoshop for all your editing.

And more importantly, if you want to preserve quality, you should not be working on JPEG files because each time you resave a JPEG, you lose quality, even saving at max quality. First thing you should do is save as PSD (or TIFF) and work on this.

It’s an Album issue, not Photoshop. I don’t recall the details of it but you can get more info in the Album forum.
