I have just scaned in an old 35mm neg and there is a lot of dirt dots on the image. I’m sure anyone who has scaned in a photo will no you get this sometimes.

How, and what is the easyest way to clean up the photo not using the clone tool?

Any tips will be most appreciated.

Thanks

Hicks

Make a small area selection, run the dust and scratch filter, move the selection to the next spot etc. etc.

You could try the Patch Tool.. Read how to use it in the Help File.

I usually use the Clone Tool in Darken and Lighten mode over the image, depending on the lightness of the artifact I am removing.

With a pressure sensitive Wacom, I can do this very fast, without any ‘clone giveaways’.

Why are you automatically ruling out one of the more useful tools for this type of work?

You might save yourself a lot of time and effort by cleaning the negative with the appropriate solution(s) and rescanning.

Perhaps one of the photographers here can suggest the proper products and techniques.

I just want to see if there might be an easy way than using the clone tool or a way that I dont know about.

Thanks for your help guys

take a snapshot.
blur (or dust & scratches) with a setting that makes your average dust spot dissapear. add a little noise to imitate the grain in your original layer. take a snapshot…this will be your ‘corrected’ image source. now, with the history brush, select a soft brush of appropriate size and spot your original snapshot.

You could implement this idea with layers and masks too.

….and to expand on Enrique’s procedure, use the History Brush in Lighten mode for dark spots and Darken mode for light spots. It’s less destructive that way.

Have your negs scanned at your local Walgreens or Walmart on their Fuji Frontier minilabs. They’ll scan to cd at 1800 ppi all 24 exp. in an hour for about 4 to 5 bucks. Emaculate scans. Not one scratch or smudge.

Some pro version labs using the Fuji will give higher ppi scans to tiffs at extra cost.

It’s worth a try just to check them out and compare to your scans.
