Hi Guys , I have decided to upgrade from PS7 to the CS2 and see that it costs$149 in the USA. I converted that to $NZ and it comes out to just over 200 of our dollars so I applied for a price from the agents for Adobe over here .Their price to me is $370 ?? If that’s not a rip off then I don’t know what is. I was wondering if I could get someone in the USA to buy it for me ,would there be any problem with that? as far as Adobe was concerned I mean.Unfortunately you cant buy online if you don’t live in America.

Just for the heck of it, have you had a look at the GIMP? It’s nearly just as functional as Photoshop (though not quite as optimized for speed yet), and it would cost you nothing.

I’m actually going to be moving all of my projects over to the GIMP after I get my new NetBSD workstation built.

That’s more than a little overstated. The GIMP has about 10% of Photoshop’s functionality, perhaps less. It appears OK for the casual hobbyist who only wants to play with web images or print RGB images from a consumer inkjet printer. Unless I’ve totally overlooked some of its features I don’t see any capability to produce CMYK files or separations, handle spot colors, or to output files suitable for import into a page layout program for professional printing. It would be useless in a full service graphics organization.

I’m sure the GIMP is a fine free option for the home user and the price is certainly fair, but it’s not even close to being "nearly just as functional as Photoshop." That would be like saying a skateboard is "nearly just as functional as a M1A1 Abrams tank" because they both roll down the street.

Another of "The GIMP’s" limitations … and potentially the most serious for many users … is that it has absolutely *no* 16-bit-per-color capabilities. Everything is converted to 8-bit.

AFAIK there is apparently no activity aimed at adding this capability to future versions. Overall I would say that your statement "That’s more than a little overstated. The GIMP has about 10% of
PhotoShop’s functionality, perhaps less. …" should be modified to read more like 5% of PhotoShop’s capabilities.

IMHO: One other program that I feel should be considered as serious software … if Color Separations (and CMYK / Lab color capabilities) are *not* required … would be Digital Light and Color’s Picture Window Pro.

are you sure that price is just the PS upgrade? Maybe they are quoting for the In Design suite that includes the Illustrator upgrade? You can’t order from Adobe directly but certainly other USA resellers would ship it?

Reasonably sure of what they are quoting for as I just asked for a quote on the PS upgrade but might pull them up about it and check at the same time, Thanks. The reason I thought it might be difficult to get it directly from the US is that when I tried to pre order it from Adobe in the US they wanted my serial number.

Surprise, surprise. In the UK they seem to think that despite the exchange rate of nearly $2 to the pound, that $1 = 1 GBP.

I should have been more clear about what I meant.

As far as the GIMP being used for producing images, it has many tools that are virtually identical to Photoshop’s. However, when it comes to prepress functionality, no it has virtually none of the capabilities of Photoshop, so no, you can’t run prepress jobs in GIMP at this point.

There are many plugins in the GIMP that I use for generating effects for my imagery that I don’t have with my older version of Photoshop. Plus, I also like the fact that you can use things like ScriptFu, which I think is quite a bit more powerful than Photoshop’s Actions.

I’m sure the GIMP is a fine free option for the home user and the price is certainly fair, but it’s not even close to being "nearly just as functional as Photoshop." That would be like saying a skateboard is "nearly just as functional as a M1A1 Abrams tank" because they both roll down the street.

*chuckle*

As I said, I should have been more careful about the context of my statement.

However, you might find it interesting that some Hollywood studios are actively using a modified version of the GIMP, which was originally called "FilmGIMP", and later renamed to Cinepaint.

http://cinepaint.sourceforge.net/

A bit different application from print, but there must be something decent in the GIMP codebase that some people like.

Alternatively of course, you can buy the upgrade in Zimbabwe. You should shop (further) around!
It’s only zm2405000 (zimdollars) IF available.
ps.
There was a bankrobbery in Harare last week, and ZD900 000 000 was stolen.

Hi KatWoman,

no, I think Peter is right. You would be amazed how expensive things are in Australia in this regard. Photoshop has been over $1000 (AUSD) for years now! That is full purchase price, of course, not upgrade price. I have not seen prices for CS2 yet, but will let you know when I find out.

Brian.
