You have airbrush option on, is my guess..

….or spacing in the brush palette
none of the above accually. scatter and jitter are both off. i have been using PS for about 5 years now and i know its not related to PS. its something else causing it. i have all settings correct.
Crack – again, check spacing (NOT scatter or jitter): make sure it is on and set to a reasonable value.
that was it, that oyu sir
I also had noticed that Spacing is not automatically on with the Brushes in CS. I find it incredibly annoying because each time I change to a different-sized or different-shaped brush (including rubber stamp) I have to remember to go in and click on Spacing, whereas I used to just hold down the shift key to get a continuous line.
Is there a way to have Spacing on as a default?
starting with 7 they want you to use presets, rather than changing brushes… if that helps. annoying at first, but you get used to it! 🙂
Linda – no, spacing IS automatically on with the default CS brushes, except for some of the preset files (which have always had spacing off).
Well actually my issue is in using brushes & the rubber stamp, I expect to be able to hold down the Shift key and continue a straight line each time I click, as I always could before. At first I thought my Shift key was broken because the line was not continuous with each click. Then I looked at the brush settings and found that if I click Spacing to On (because it is not on automatically), then the brush would connect the dots with a line when holding Shift, but if not, then I just get a dot each time I click down. I can pull the brush along and get continuous movement, but often I want to constrain it to a straight line. Is there something I’m missing here? It doesn’t seem logical that you have to go to the settings each time in order to use the Shift key to constrain along a line.

did you create a preset?
No, I’m just using the Basic Brushes.
No, I’m just using the Basic Brushes.
then did you see my post #8? 🙂
Yes I did see your post #8, but wasn’t sure what you meant. Does "using presets" mean I should create my OWN preset with Spacing turned on to each brush, then save it and have that preset as my own collection? I thought by "presets" you meant they want everyone to just use the sets they provide and change settings every time you need them different. Please clarify.
thanks, Linda

yup. that’s what the adobe party line is since they changed the way brushes behaved with version 7’s new brush engine.
Oh, OK thanks, Dave. Do you know if I could copy just the starburst-shaped brushes from one brush set and add it to my new preset that would be a modified duplicate of the basic brushes? It would be nice to have one set loaded all the time that had all the brushes I use regularly in one set.
sure. you can copy any of the brushes going and create as many presets as you like. i suggest you go over the preset section of the manual and the online help to get you going.
good luck, dave
"Basic Brushes" are presets with the spacing turned off.
Most of the presets supplied with Photoshop have the spacing turned on (including the default brushes).
Again, this behavior has not changed at all.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh — that was my problem! I didn’t realize there was a "Default Brushes" because it wasn’t on the list, so I picked Basic Brushes instead, thinking that was the default. But I was bummed that it didn’t have the starburst brush and that the spacing was turned off on all the brushes. Now that you told me, I just selected "Reset Brushes" and got the old palette I was expecting — just the way I want it!
Thank you so much! You saved me from searching through the online help (although it does come in handy when you get really lost). That’s the info I needed all along. Thanks again, Chris! —Linda
