Fixing photo using brightness temporarily

Often photos must be brightened to see detail that needs to be fixed. However, when restoring to original (less) brightness, photo detail is lost. What is the proper approach?

Use an Adjustment Layer. It only temporarily changes what you see, until you toggle its visibility or drag it to the trash.
