I’ve just installed PS6.0.1 on a new WinXP-Home computer that has one 120GB hard drive. When installing Photoshop, a warning dialog came up indicating PS could have problems if the scratch disk is on the same drive as the program (I think I have the gist of that right).

What recommendations do you folks have on this issue?

I will be upgrading PS in the near future, but I need to resolve this now so production can get back on track. TIA!

Linda,

You’re just fine running Photoshop on a single partition. All the message is stating is that Photoshop prefers to have its scratch disk located on a separate drive for optimal performance.

Sure you can add a second hard drive and set that as the scratch drive, and yes, Photoshop’s performance will benefit from that, but it’s not a necessary thing in order for Photoshop to run, and run well.

You could partition your 120GB drive and set the scratch preferences to one of the other partitions. It’s not quite the same thing as having a second or third hard drive in your box, but it does help.

Thanks for the reassurance. The prospect of partitioning a brand new hard drive is not something I am faintly interested in! As if there isn’t enough new stuff to get used to.

Just be sure to keep the drive defragmented as much as possible.
