OK …. I went in and upped the history to many more states, and I have all the choices chosen, so why is it that when I do several steps … and go to undo in history, it only goes so far?

I’ve got the states set at: 50

I do 15 steps and go back to undo and it’s only showing up to 10, what gives? Am I doing something wrong?

I don’t know for sure, but do you have enough memory (RAM) on your system? History is memory intensive.

Hi Roy,

Here’s what I have:

Memory: 1 GB of RAM
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
2.08 GHz
35 GB from C-D and E drive combined

Hi Dee; I have mine set at 20 steps. A suggestion for you … get in the habit of making a "snapshot about every ten steps or so. If you are like me, you can forget how many steps you have done. So with a snapshot you can always go back to that even if past your max in history. (it is the little camera icon at the bottom of the history palette)

Hi Dee.

Thanks for the reply, your system seems Ok.

Craig’s suggestion is a very good one. I always try to do that myself, but often forget in the heat of concentration, and when I want to go backwards, – 25 steps too far.

I take it that you have checked your setting in preferences, for RAM allocated to Ps, mine is set to 65%, (660 Mb Ram).

I wonder if your Preferences file could be corrupted, from what I read that seems to be a fairly common cause of problems, but I have never had any need to investigate that.

Perhaps one of the real experts on this NG will be able to help.

Best of luck,

It depends on how you have your memory set up, especially your scratch disk.

FWIW, you really shouldn’t set it at more than 20. You’re better off (As someone else has suggested) using snapshots.

How big is your hard drive? How much free space does it have?

The History consumes a LOT of hard drive space, and I do mean a lot. The number of History states may be limited by the amount of available hard drive space.

Have you told Photoshop that it is permitted to use all your hard drives as scratch space? You do this in the Preferences command.
