I have just taken a few snaps with my 300D and when I tried to put them on my PC, they are showing as CRW files and I cannot open them? What does this mean? I formatted my flashcard and tried again but the same thing happened. This is a first for me and I have been using my camera for almost a year. Can anybody enlighten me? I hate to think what would have happened if I had been taking important photos (I am a local photographer doing weddings etc)

It seems to me that you are shooting in RAW. See if you can open them with the supplied fileviewer program.. If you go into your cameras settings you should be able to switch it back to JPEG.

I know that that is what it looks like, but why would this happen in the middle of shooting. I took three shots, the first was a normal jpeg and the next two were CRW’s. I tried a different flashcard and they are all CRW’s also. I can now see the photos but I cannot open them in PS or any other image viewer?

They are Canon camera raw files.

You _should_ be using raw format for all of your "important photos." If you’re working with JPG files you’re not getting the best quality images possible from your camera.

I am beginning to understand that now. On a different topic, could anyone explain to me why very often my 300D does not read the light properly? So often my photos are way too bright and I have to take them with manual settings with greatly increased shutter speed. I keep thinking that there’s a fault with the camera. It definitely isn’t taking pictures like it was last summer.

You have instructed your camera to take pictures in "RAW format" rather than JPEG or TIFF format. To use the RAW images, you must use the Photoshop RAW plugin or use your camera’s software.

For information on instructing your camera how to save the images, see your camera’s manual.

It is just a little bit concerning that someone who seems to know very little about how his Camera works, or about how to control exposure, should be out there taking "Important" Photos like Weddings.

I do hope his potential customers are reading this, and taking avoiding action.

Well Roy, it just so happens that I use film when shooting weddings! I bought my 300D last year to play around with and I haven’t scrutinised the workings of it as I just use medium jpegs. I haven’t used it professionally although I do shoot weddings digitally just as a little bonus for the couples (I put the images on a CD for them). So you should not be so quick to rush to a judgement on my capabilities, just because I am not familiar with RAW files!

Suggestion #1) Re-read the manual (just on general principle). I have a 10D and I STILL have to go back and refresh my memory on certain functions every now and then.

Suggestion #2) Reset the camera to the factory defaults and start from there. Over the past couple of years I’ve come to the conclusion that (like many computers) the 10D needs to be "rebooted" every once in a while. I suspect this may be true for other makes/models as well.

Suggestion #3) If your camera suddenly is running on other settings you may have either hit a combination of buttons (say while putting it into or pulling it out of a camera bag) and changed several settings, or that little button cell that holds the memory may be going dead and causing random changes.

Suggestion #4) If other things have changed too, it’s possible your metering mode has been shifted to center weighted which could account for your off readings. On the other hand my 10D has ALWAYS exposed just slightly light so I usually have the camera set to compensate.

You switched over to shooting in RAW mode. If youΒΉre a photographer you should have been doing that in the first place. Any photographer shooting anything but RAW is probably an impersonator. They do make manuals with words and information, which probably came in the same box as the camera!!!! I suggest you read it.

I am not criticising you for not being familiar with RAW files. We all come across something we don’t fully understand now and again.

BUT you have had the Camera for a year, I have had a Digital for 4 months, and the very first time I touched a Digital Camera was December 23rd 2004.

I would expect any competent Professional photographer to know more about all of his cameras, than any keen Amateur, and just on the off chance that he did not really use one of his Cameras, I would have expected him to know to look at the Manual for it.

If you are doing Paid for Photography, you should know exactly what you are doing.

I am still not impressed, but there are Wedding Photographers, and there are Wedding Photographers.

OK, by now you know that these are Canon’s RAW files, and that the setting for File Size (or whatever Canon calls it), has been hit. In this case, while shooting, as you did get 1, or so, JPGs, then CRWs.

A good NG for asking questions, like what might have changed vis-a-vis the camera’s metering is: rec.photo.digital.slr-systems. There are a lot of Canon users there, and they seem to know their gear. One caveat, however, there are also Nikon users lurking, who will respond to your legit posts, just like some did here. Be warned, as you will hear "… just get a Nikon, and throw that Canon in the ______… ". I see it daily, and I am a Nikon user. Also, don’t worry, as the Canon users do the same silly thing.

As others have said, you do need to explore the RAW format, especially with regards to images that will go into PS. Once you go RAW, you will almost NEVER go back.

Good luck,

Be aware that RAW files are only available in the ‘creative’ modes, i.e. ‘P’, Tv, Av, etc. Even if RAW is selected in those modes, the camera will default to jpeg files when in green zone or the other icon modes.

Were you shooting in the green zone or an icon mode, then switched to P, Tv, or Av modes? That will shift your images from jpeg to RAW – if RAW is selected for those modes.

Eugene.

I have been accused of being a net bully, because I was a bit unkind to you over your lack of knowledge.

I do get rather annoyed at so called "Professional" photographers, who take money for work, and then produce results which are far from Professional. Very often they turn out to have less knowledge of photography than the average Amateur.

You have been using that Digital Camera for a year, and according to your own website producing 200 to 300 Digital Photos of every wedding you do. So you have no excuse for not knowing all the ins and outs of how it does what and why.

Unlike Mark, I am not going to comment on the quality of your work. That speaks for itself.

I think my comments, while being unkind, are justified.

Do not just take offence, do go and study up your Instruction Books and learn more about this wonderful hobby.

I have just taken a few snaps with my 300D and when I tried to put them
on my PC, they are showing as CRW files and I cannot open them? What
does
this mean? I formatted my flashcard and tried again but the same thing happened. This is a first for me and I have been using my camera for almost a year. Can anybody enlighten me? I hate to think what would
have
happened if I had been taking important photos (I am a local
photographer
doing weddings etc)

It is just a little bit concerning that someone who seems to know very little about how his Camera works, or about how to control exposure, should be out there taking "Important" Photos like Weddings.
I do hope his potential customers are reading this, and taking avoiding
action.

Roy G

Well Roy, it just so happens that I use film when shooting weddings! I bought my 300D last year to play around with and I haven’t scrutinised
the
workings of it as I just use medium jpegs. I haven’t used it professionally although I do shoot weddings digitally just as a little bonus for the couples (I put the images on a CD for them). So you should
not be so quick to rush to a judgement on my capabilities, just because
I
am not familiar with RAW files!
I am not criticising you for not being familiar with RAW files. We all
come
across something we don’t fully understand now and again.
BUT you have had the Camera for a year, I have had a Digital for 4 months,
and the very first time I touched a Digital Camera was December 23rd 2004.

I would expect any competent Professional photographer to know more about all of his cameras, than any keen Amateur, and just on the off chance that
he did not really use one of his Cameras, I would have expected him to
know
to look at the Manual for it.

If you are doing Paid for Photography, you should know exactly what you
are
doing.

I am still not impressed, but there are Wedding Photographers, and there
are
Wedding Photographers.

Roy G
Your opinions are irrelevant. What’s your trip, you friggin’ net bully? You expect everybody to know everything about a certain subject? What a moron. I’d hire ohmagawd to do anything before I’d hire an arrogant ass like you to even wipe my ass, even though I’m sure you’d do a great job.
Scruff

Yea sure. Have you looked at his website?

Too right. I know a number of amateurs whose skills are better than some of the "professionals" I’ve come across. πŸ™‚

Well there is no License" to practice photography required, no industry standards, or test to be passed to be considered a "pro". So by default anyone who makes money at it is a "pro".
If it’s what the market will buy, many people have very bad taste in photography and are more than happy to buy it from hacks. They can’t see the difference or maybe they can’t afford better.
I am not sure how these "bad photogs" stay in business but someone must be buying it.
I think skill in artwork and creating photos is separate from the talent needed to market and sell it.
Anyway if an amateur is someone who loves what they do, loving something and being good at it are 2 different things
Some of the amateurs are awful too. And there are good photos and bad photos from the same person sometimes.

But I agree with the post
I do get rather annoyed at so called "Professional" photographers, who take
money for work, and then produce results which are far from Professional

It disturbs my sense of fairness to see people pay for really bad quality photography and it makes the profession as a whole look bad.

Okay okay. So I acted a little dumb. I did title my initial post "Near Panic" after all. I am very familiar with my camera but I never even looked at the possibility of using RAW files because I did not have that option with previous digital cameras. So I should have read the manual before I posted here! Well, I didn’t! I took three photos of a tree in
my
garden, when I tried to get them into my PC, one was a jpeg (as
expected)
and the next two were RAW’s (unexpected and unknown). Okay? So I’m a stupid git? That’s how we learn, isn’t it? Once again, thanks for the politeness and help that I got from most folk here. God help the rest of ya!

Eugene.

I have been accused of being a net bully, because I was a bit unkind to
you
over your lack of knowledge.

I do get rather annoyed at so called "Professional" photographers, who

money for work, and then produce results which are far from Professional. Very often they turn out to have less knowledge of photography than the average Amateur.

You have been using that Digital Camera for a year, and according to your own website producing 200 to 300 Digital Photos of every wedding you do.
So
you have no excuse for not knowing all the ins and outs of how it does
what
and why.

Unlike Mark, I am not going to comment on the quality of your work. That speaks for itself.

I think my comments, while being unkind, are justified.

Do not just take offence, do go and study up your Instruction Books and learn more about this wonderful hobby.

I am not slamming his work. I have very carefully not said anything against it, I only said look and judge for yourselves.

I did complain about his inability to control a Camera he has owned for a year, and with which he takes hundreds of photos for each wedding shoot he goes to. I did so in moderate language, I may have been a bit unkind, but I was not rude.

Strange as it may seem, I would expect a Professional Photographer, who makes a living by using his cameras, to know how they work.

If you want the opportunity to criticise my work, then you are going to have to show some of yours.

Along the lines of the old rope. . . .
Someone on eBay listed a "Barbie Doll . . . . New Box" and received an outlandish price for the box — no doll which the buyer’s listing did not include. He/she cleverly inserted a lot of verbage between the opening and "New Box" to confuse the syntax.
